Yes, having those stately sandhills stroll through the yard was a thrilling sight. I think that's one of the things my husband will miss most about leaving Wisconsin. We've had the same pair of cranes visit us for the last three or four years.

Wow, sandhill cranes in your back yard - you are so lucky!

Yesterday I had to go out and buy another huge bag of birdseed (sunflower seeds) and I also bought a bag of safflower seeds. Never tired them before so will see what happens. Need to refill my suet feeders too as I love watching the woodpeckers.

Sammi, l'll be interested to know how you do with the safflower. The guy at a local store recommended it because he said that the squirrels wouldn't eat it. Our experience was that most of our other birds didn't care for it either.

Maybe we just had really finicky birds who preferred other stuff we had because those are birds we see, but all the other varieties of seed would disappear and there would only be safflower left. Hmmm?

Last year the same birds we have this year wouldn't touch the safflower and this year they just gobbled it up. Maybe it has to age a year, lol!

Ellen, I bet you're right. If I'd only been more patient . .

I have only one big feeder out this year but have been filling it with a mix practically everyday. We have had jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, chick-a-dees, & several I don't know. I saw a rather skinny robin the other day but it is too cold for worms. The squirrels climb in & stuff themselves but, they have to eat too.

I love to watch them and it also is like kitty tv for the cats as they sit on the back of the loveseat & watch.

I keep seeing this thread.. and everytime I do I think about how much I need to get my feeders filled.
Never had any problem with squirrels so far.. my cat is who I always keep an eye on.
I enjoy blue birds and have a bluebird box in my back yard.
We have alot of sparrows around and because the kill bluebirds I have to watch for them as well.
