Volunteer! Lend a Hand for Animals

Volunteering your time is one of the best ways to help animals. Whether you walk dogs at your shelter, stuff envelopes for an educational mailing, or assist with a fund-raising event, you can make a difference in the lives of animals. When you give animals the gift of your time, you'll get back as much as you give?maybe even more!

Here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering for a local animal protection group:

Be part of the solution. You'll join a network of hundreds of thousands of people working to make the world safe and more humane for all living creatures. You'll make the jobs of everyone working for animals a little easier by lending a hand and spreading the message of responsible pet ownership.

Get warm fuzzies. You'll never find a more grateful and accepting comrade than an animal you have comforted. Who can't use another loyal support in life?

Keep good company. You'll make lots of new friends?and not just the four-legged kind. Working side by side with people who share similar interests can forge lifelong friendships.

Meet the new you. You'll discover skills you never knew you had, and you may be surprised at what you're capable of achieving. Be all that you never knew you could be.

Gain a new career. You'll learn things that may lead you to the career?or career change?of your dreams. Employers and college admissions officers look favorably on time spent in volunteer serivce.

Enjoy a wagging tail, a purr, and a smile. Didn't someone once say that the best things in life are free?

Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

Be an Angel - Grant A Wish, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 7-13

WEST CHESTER, PA - November is typically a time to reflect and give thanks. This year consider thanking your local animal shelter.
November 7 - 13 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Shelters serve eight to ten million injured, homeless and abused
animals each year with the necessities - food, water and shelter - and they rely on cash donations from the community to make that possible.

While the pets wait in cages and hope for a loving home, they have little comfort to call their own. Treats and toys that make the wait bearable are also appreciated by both the shelter and the pet, but these are "luxuries" and are rarely available.

If you would like to show your appreciation to a local shelter but don't know what to do, here are some suggestions.

* Ask your shelter if they have an event planned. If they do, volunteer to participate. If they don't, offer to organize one. Get the children involved.
* Tell everyone it's National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! Use your personal e-mail list or bulletin board at the gym, place of worship, grocery store or any other community venue.
* Be an angel . . . grant a wish. Log on to or and donate a gift package full of toys and treats to the shelter of your choice. and oversee the national Toy and Treat Donation Program - an initiative that coordinates gifts, donors and shelters. "Some pet lovers donate in memory of a pet or as a thank you for the new family member they've recently adopted," says
owner and pet advocate Jill Gizzio. "Sometimes people don't know where to send their donations. We can help with that. We have a list of shelters waiting to receive treats and toys."
