Bettas

I own two Bettas....one of each sex. I'd like to know how you can tell if the female is ready to mate??? The male is constantly making the bubble nest, but I'm not sure about just when I should put the female in with the male???? Anyone know?

Hi autumnmum!!

I am NOT a Betta expert by any means but I went through this with my middle son. He wanted to breed bettas for a bit. Here's what we found out.......

IT IS REALLY HARD TO DO!!!!!

The water has to be JUST the right ph, tempature, etc., one pair of fish needs like a 10-20 gallon tank with lots of live plants, they have to be feed live food for x number of weeks before you start with the breeding.........

Much more hassle than we wanted to go through.

Try looking on the internet under "betta breeding" for a wealth of info. Also look at your local pet store for some of the small betta books. We have...

Bettas--A Complete Pet Owner's Manual.....Barron's
ISBN# 0-7641-1653-3

It has tons of info and some really beautiful pictures.

The BIGGEST thing about raising bettas is DON"T try to use the fish you get from Walmart or even your local pet store. They are not in great condition due to those tiny little containers they always put them in and they are too old---the books will tell you that by the time a betta gets his full fins, he is already 2-21/2 yrs old--they only live about 3-31/2 yrs. If you seriously want to raise bettas-you should find a local breeder to get stock from--much healthier and better taken care of. Unfortunely--there isn't that many. I can't remember where it was (found it through a search) but at least one place will ship fish to you....but they can be expensive!!!!

I hate to rain on your picnic but..........we decided just to buy the Walmart fish and enjoy them while we could. We had neither the patience, the room or the money to give it a serious try.....

Keep me posted------GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Thanx for the info. These were given to me as gifts, and with my 'fish-history', I doubt if I will be serious about breeding them. I'll be like you and just enjoy watching them. So, I guess they'll both die as virg---!!!! LOLOL!!!!!!
