My kids act shy but one is a little shy and one is not. My youngest acts shy but is very smart, he does not understand the importance of small talk. We have been working on this. Of course my kids are happier with adults not teenagers thier age. In fact my youngest thinks teens are too immature and is simply disgusted by them. lol
My 2 boys, one is really outgoing and one is shy until he's had an opportunity to see you you work and relate, but a lot of times just keeps to himself. Saying that he's the thinker in the family LOL
DD2 was painfully shy when she was little. She still is shy, but as not as bad as then. She has no problem making friends. She has tons of them, and seems comfortable in groups. She is shyer around grown-ups, but is also getting better at that.

My son was never really shy. My daughter was pretty shy when she was a toddler but now that she has started school and thanks to her big bro being so outgoing, she is coming right out of her shell!

School has just been amazing for my kids. My daughter now speaks right up most of the time.
To try to get them to talk to people, we encouraged them to order their own meals when we were in a restaurant. Of course it was all discussed before it was ordered but this way they felt involved.
Also, when we were at the library, they would give their library card to the librarian and then they would turn in their own books when we returned them.
I was horribly shy as a child. That is until I joined 4-H (it was my niche- I quess you could say) and helped me make friends, and come out of my shell. Through it I developed leadership and public speaking skills that helped make me who I am today, and I had so much fun while doing it that I did not even realize it was happening. Or any other club in your area that might be appealing to your son/daughter or it could be a sport/dance/musical instrument karate anything that they can excell at and could have in common or show skill at around their peers.
