dh drops it on the table, I come home from work and open it, then action items go to my desk downstairs and junk to the paper bag for recycling

I always get the mail so I check it right away. Write on the front to pay or check out as needed.
Separate the junk mail & magazines. Have a wicker basket on the table where I put my bills. Stand up the ones to be paid so I can check it against my monthly checking statement with the check number visible or bank draft written on it. Make sure junk mail before tossing doesn't have our names on it. Shred anything from new credit card offers. Have a metal cabinet with folders to store bills paid. Doctor & hospital store in shoe boxes with the year written on the front. Comes in handy for record keeping. Important documents in a water proof and fire proof security box in case of disasters.

I am usually the one who brings in the mail, hubby rarely even checks the mailbox. I sort out junk mail (in the trash can immediately) and bills get taken out of their envelopes, return envelope goes in the trash, the bill gets put on a magnetic clip on my refrigerator. I have index cards with 4 weeks of Fridays dates on them, each gets put into one of those clips with the index card to pay that bill. I pay all my bills online and pay what bills I can each week before they are due of course. Wish I could say my paychecks would cover all bills at once but sadly not.
