Question Saying goodbye to clutter

I have never considered myself to be a pack rat person, but in a way; I guess I am a junk collector. I have pile and pile of papers and really need to bid farewell to them but don’t know how. I always end up asking myself what If I need them later. Anybody has this kind of problem and how to get rid of it?

I am trying to clean up paper clutter and I now have a file rack for our incoming mail. I just have to be consistent with puting everyone's mail in their slot and not just puting it on the table! I also have a plastic drawer cabinet I have my girls put their papers from school in so they dont pile up around the house.

I have a box for all my bills, and my receipts. I am a college student and print lots of reading materials. I even have separate boxes for old cards and new cards.

Question

Luzviminda, what a great question/thread. I so identify with your dilemma! I will be eagerly awaiting the solutions. I have the plastic file box for incoming bills, it sits on the bench so as I always see it, or I forget to pay things. But then, I also have "THE CUPBOARD". You know the one? Whenever we have company the door opens and gobbles up the piles of papers from the table. And when "THE CUPBOARD" is full then I have a mammoth task to clean it out. Thank goodness it is a BIG cupboard! But by the time I clean it out I realise I didn't need the papers in there anyway so they get thrown out. There has to be a better way.

Every 2 or 3 years we have a garage sale and get rid of excess clothes, toys and household items. This tends to clear out cupboards and robes.
On papers/bills, I always pay them ASAP to make sure they don't get forgotten or lost, and then I file them away, in a filing cabinet, my mum puts them in click clack lidded boxes to stack away.
A lot of papers for warrantys etc run out after a certain time, so are useless, I toss them.
I find for me I need to have a place for everything and everything in it's place. Makes me sound very anal I know, but if I don't employ this method my house would be a shambles LOL
Lynne that big cupboard for me is the walk in robe, you can hold so much in there!

I was cleaning off my desk today.

I have a clipboard on the one corner of my desk. That's where all the papers to go back to school, things to be mailed, etc. will go. Thursdays are "notice day" at DD's school (Big DS's notices are mailed home once a month) so I am going to make a note on my planner to do my desk work on Thursday afternoons. We'll see how that goes.

It works for me

Hi, in February the FlyLady is teaching us a new habit: declutter for 15 minutes every day. If even 15 minutes seem overwhelming, you can do it 5 minutes at a time. Use a timer and put music on! She has suggestions on her site on how to deal with paper clutter. Just go to Flylady.net, and type "control the chaos at your desk" on the left column in Google search.

I am doing it little by little and it is working, hooray!

Good luck to you too !

There are several tricks to controlling paper clutter, and I think Flylady knows all of them! Something I do when the filing stack gets scary is make a point of filing one or two pieces of paper every time I go into the room where the computer is. The filing cabinet is next to the computer. Almost before I realize it, the huge stack is gone, and it seems like I haven't even worked at it.

Another thing is to dispose of junk mail immediately. I shred all mine, so I open it, shred it, and I don't have to deal with it again.
