Daughter's Formal Debutaunte Ball-Quincenera
 
My daughter is celebrating her 15th Birthday or Quincenera on October 11th. This Hispanic tradition is as large as a wedding.

Which do you think would be more economic? Roasting a pig or making chicken? We were considering b-b-quing the chicken the night before on gas grills and then wrapping it in foil to stay in a low oven all night. Some one said it would stay moist that way.
Also, we are planning to serve rice and beans as well.

How does this sound? Any other suggestions? We need to be careful $ wise. :.

Morelia92 - just curious..... a girl doesn't get sponsors for her Quincenera as she would for her wedding?


As for what would be more economic... have you figured out how much chicken you would need & the cost of that much chicken as opposed to the cost of the pig?

I've been to several Sweet 15 birthday parties, including two in Latin America that started at 6pm and lasted until 7am the next morning with food and drinks being served all night long by the wait staff! These are the most magical parties a young girl can hope to have, until her wedding day!

I would suggest taking a look at Dayle's Growlies for Groups website at www.bigrecipes.com for some GREAT info on hosting such a large party. They will have some great info on how to do your chicken (I think it's easier than roasting a pig). They have tons of recipes designed for big parties (up to 500ppl) and a great message board where you can ask specific questions from other people who do catering professionally. There is also a great recipe converter that will help you scale a recipe up or down depending on the number of people you are expecting. Once you have your guest list established and you know how many people to expect, you will be able to scale the recipe to exactly what you need.

There are also lots of recipes for items that can be made ahead of time and frozen, dessert ideas that are quick, great ideas for how to display the food, how many drinks you'll need, etc. Make sure to take a look at the food safety sections so you can see the best way to keep food at the proper temps for however long you need it. You don't want anyone to get sick! This is just a GREAT site for anyone hosting a BIG party!

That's the good news...

I am concerned about food poisoning keeping the chickens at that temperature overnight...and if you want to test the way they stay moist.. roast one chicken tomorrow, and leave it in the oven wrapped in foil. Somehow these don't sound appetizing to me or safe.....

I have a suggestion..... why not contact your local supermarket...
tell them how many chickens you need, and ask how much for the number needed.. this way they can make them 2-3 hours before you need them. All you have to do is pick them up.

Purchasing already roasted chickens in a supermarket is not much more expensive than roasting them yourself..... It's a thought!

Y'all can make the accompanying dishes at home......

How about adding tamales to the menu? Most of the prep can be done ahead of time, and they are very popular. Depending on the filling they can be really inexpensive, yet festive.

Hi everyone!

Been really busy, sorry I haven't posted for awhile! :.

Things are coming along BEAUTIFULLY! BTW, thank you for all of your wonderful ideas for the food. :*

As far as tamales, my daughter would love that.....but the work to make tamales (especially for 250-300) would be overwhelming! ^^

Maggy's "godmother" is making 2 large pots of rice. She owns a Mexican resturant so she has plenty of experience. She said that she could only help with the rice though due to the fact Saturday night is her most busy time of the week.

I am going to make 2 large pots of pinto beans that morning, with bacon, ham and hotdogs. We will serve onions and cilantro to garnish.

As well my girl friend is making up lots of meat balls, and we are going to also have chicken wings. Hopefully some one at church could make the potato salad, and we can also have chicken and / or ham salad sandwiches. Chips and pretzels..... does that sound ok? :-P:: Also Maggy's godmother said 1 case of tortillas should be ok. Cost is about $25.00 a case.

Everything is done other than my dh and my outfits. Our younger children's outfits (they are participating) and paying the dj ( to be paid the night of the party), finish paying the hall (after the final count) and the food!

I can not believe this is now less than a month a way~

Well hello everyone!


October 11th was tha date of my daughter's Quince!
It went so well!

The processional was "Here I am to Worship" her daddy and I escorted her in.

At the alter her daddy presented her with a red rose, her brother and cousin with white roses.

The sermon, presentations, purity vows everything was great.
There were 150 guests at the church. The reception I am not sure.

My dear husband cried 3 times. I guess that isn't so strange, but he is not generally emotional. I started crying when I walked her down the isle.

I plan to post pictures when I down load my scanner.

The party went well. The food turner out great. Most importantly she had fun, and she was gourgeous!

I didn't know there was a church service involved in this celebration!

When I was in high school my best friend was from Ecuador, and she had a Quinceanera. I was one of the "attendants" and since I didn't speak much Spanish at the time, was generally clueless about the whole thing! There were only 2 of us who were not Spanish speakers. There was no church service. We had dancing lessons for weeks to get ready, they hired a makeup artist, and we wore these outrageous dresses. (My DD loves it for dress-up now). I wish I had been able to understand more of what went on.
