When I was studying, observing, assisting, and Substituting as a Preschool teacher the 2's, 3's and 4 year old children were very good at setting and cleaning up the tables for meals; "passing" food at the tables; sweeping and dust-pan cleaning the floors; preparing for "nap" / quiet time; clean-up play time; and getting themselves dressed after "accidents," before, and after out-door play time, as well as "special" activities (field trips, picture day, leaving for special family day activities, etc). 3, 4, & 5 year old children can help make meals - getting items out, pouring and scooping are beneficial on many levels. If you need dough "rolled" out, with guidance cookie cutters can be used to help make biscuits, cookies, etc.
Children from age 2 - 9 are usually helpers...their minds are wide open for learning, and for the most part, being family helpers. Except for some physical / metal / emotional restraints (birth or during growth years), children can are capable of doing quite a bit more than most adults think they can.
These are the "forming" years. Children are little sponges and they are eager to learn, practice, and retain what they learn...this includes mannerisms they will need in the adult years. The more consistent adults are with children, the more they learn and grow on all levels. Just allowing a child to dress themselves boost their psychological as well as emotional needs, not to mention their physical needs (builds their muscles, bones, and tendons in their fingers, hands, and arms)...

Practicing school routine
My 6 year old son will be starting first grade in a few weeks. Last year he was in the afternoon kindergarten so I didn't have to worry about when he woke up in the morning. He is a slow starter and hard to wake up so on Sunday night we started our school bedtime and morning school day routine.
Right now we are working with an 8:30 p.m. upstairs for shower, pick out clothes, read story and go to sleep by 9:00 p.m. system. In the morning the alarm goes off at 7:00 a.m. for rise and shine. He dresses in what we have laid out, goes downstairs and gets things out for breakfast and for his lunch box. I dress then join him. We fix breakfast and lunchbox together, we eat then he gets to play or watch TV until the timer goes off at 8:15 a.m. I remind him when the timer goes off that this would be when we would leave for school but today we are going to (and then I change whatever activity he was doing) so he knows that he is going to be interrupted when school actually starts. Hope perhaps this idea will help others!
