Do You Socialize/Get Along With Your Neighbors?

I have always heard the expression "Strong Fences Make Good Neighbors"

But we have actually installed a gate in our back fance between us and our neighbor's house...

I have a very close relationship with the family next-door to me...

But I have had people tell me I'm crazy for being friends with a next-door neighbor...

What's everyone's opinion on socializing with their neighbors?

We are so fortunate to have good neighbors all around. Seems to alternate, retired-family-retired-family...all down the street. The retired guy to the left of us never keeps still, he shovels our driveway (that we share) when dh works nights. If he is bored he will mow other peoples grass out front. I am always baking something to thank him for stuff. I tell his wife he does not have to, but she says "let him do it, it keeps him out of my hair" .

The dh on the other side passed last week. The whole neighborhood is banding together to help out. Its a race to see who can clear the driveway, bring in garbage cans or pick up mail the quickest. He is dearly missed. Now she will have to sell the house becuz she can't live alone. This will be very sad as they are like an extra set of grandparents for my dd's.

Just remembered that tomorrow is St.Pats day. Neighbors that share the driveway ususally cook too much. So it looks like we will be having corn beef & cabbage for dinner too They are from Ireland too. !

LJsmom, It's lovely to have a close-knot neighborhood lkie you describe. My neighborhood was very similar. But then prople stsrt selling their homes, or neighbors start to squabble, and very quickly the whole climate of a community can change.

I'm thankful that the neihgborhood is still nice, but it's not the same cozy-family feel we were once blessed to enjoy.

Every day I thank God for letting me move to this Development. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. We have a club house, indoor pool & outdoor pool too. We are all retired so we have time to socialize with each other. There are daily activities to join and get to gethers too. Today they had a quilt show where everyone displayed their favorites for everyone to see. Quite a few won ribbons at the Country Fair show on Saturday. Of cause I don't like people just coming in to my house at all times of the day, but if someone feels like company they can call and come over. We don't have fences but everyone respects your property and privacy. We have people of all ages which makes it interesting hearing all their stories of growing up in their time. Of course I tend to stay with the younger crowd since we have more in common. Mom had a good time today talking with the younger girls about her life when she was younger. She was the center of attention and she knew it. Not to many here her age and walking around.

My MIL lives in a place that sounds just like yours. She has 3 of her sisters living there too. They can't say enough good things about it.
There is a sign near the entrance that says something like "slow down, grandparents at play".

My neighbor on the one side has actually become a great friend. I mean we respect each others privacy and get together once in awhile. We try to be...well ~ neighborly!

The same for the neighbor across the road.
We try to be very respectful to our neighbors.

We have been very blessed!

Good Morning.
Each place I have lived in I have found it so nice to have neighbors that are polite or at least wave and say hi.
I have had neighbors of a different calliber also. Makes a difference to live next to someone that least can wave and smile.
We have been here about 3 months.
My next door neighbor is a 82 year old.
Almost everyday when I am out toodeling in the yard she will pop out to visit with me. I like that.

When we moved here in the winter months, my 12 year old son would shovel the neighbors walk way. (with no evidence to whom did it.) Was a good ice breaker to get to know your neighbor and do a kind deed.
She expressed her appreciation.

Thankgoodness for great neighbors.

Well have a happy day.

funny story

I seem to have blocked out previous neighbors, but this one stuck.
We lived in a condo before our current house. While trying to sell it, the downstairs neighbors always seemed to be cooking something nasty. There always was something brewing whenever the condo was being shown.
We nicknamed them "the fishheads" because that is what the stink reminded us of.
The place finally sold *whew*
