Pool Rules

We are putting an above ground pool in our backyard.

I know that along with the pool will come the neighborhood children, many of whom choose to hang out here from morning until night.

I want to be able to set limits on when the kids can be in my pool. Otherwise I'll wind up babysitting 5 8-year-olds all summer long! Has anyone found a good system for that?

We have a pool and our house was always the hang out when the kids where younger. I set stick rules on when they could come over and I was lucky sense it wasn't neighbor kids it was friends children. An adult had to be with them. It gets really old quick with all the kids in our house and pool. I don't miss those days.
Have a wonderful day.

We had an above ground pool when our five were younger. Each child was allowed to invite one friend. If there were more than that, or if it was a child who came every day in the summer, and stayed all day, I insisted that their Mother come with them. It worked perfectly, and I didn't end up being a baby sitter for 20 kids. I made some good friends with their moms this way also, so it was a win, win, situation.

We don't have a pool but we've become good friends with a family whose son my daughter went to school with this year - and they have a pool....

She has the same problem with the kids in the neighborhood coming over. She will set time limits during the day for the kids to swim.... for example, the kids can swim from 11:00 am - until 1:00 and then everyone out of the pool. She also does this in the evening - everyone can swim from 6:00 - 7:30 on Mon, Wed, Fri...whatever days you choose. These are the times that are "open" unless people are invited at other times. That way her family still has time to enjoy their pool and she isn't providing free babysitting all day.

She also has a rule that if your child is not a good swimmer ( or is young..aka under 9 and has to be a very good swimmer), a parent or guardian must be there with them. She is always outside when there are kids in the pool. I go along with my kids when they go over to swim because she and I usually sit on the patio (that surrounds their pool) and talk.

If there's kid who hang out all of the time, why not say to one of their parents "We love having ____ over to swim at our house. Would it be possible for you to take over "lifeguard" duties for a couple of hours on ____?"

I hope that you don't become hostess to all of the kids, too. Meaning that you will always have to provide drinks and snacks for everyone. Maybe setting up short time frames will help to prevent that.

Have fun with your new pool!

My nephew that I babysit for has an above ground pool. there were three kids in the neighborhood that always wanted to come swimming.

Here was the rule for them, you had to be invited by me to come swimming. We only swim for a certain amount of time. Here's the way it worked- Jake was only 2 and didnt like getting splashed in the face with water. I took him into the pool for 20 minutes. Then we would get out and the other kids could get in. Jake would then play on the swing set or sit with me and I would sit right next to the pool. It worked. Elijah can only be "unplugged" from his insulin pump for 1 hour, that was the time limit for all the kids. If you didn't get out when I said out, you were done in the pool for the summer.
