I am blessed to live on a street where we care about each other too. Not many left like these.

No there are not very meny places left like that so I am very lucky that I live where I do. And we all kind of look out for each other too.

caring neighbors

I've lived in this building for 10 years never knew anyone..just a hello nod if you happen to be waiting for the elevator...now I have a dinner exchange going with one neighbor and
I've been trying to sort out medicare stuff for another...and just by saying a little more than hello...

guess everyone has been come to self absorbed esp. here everyone is plugged into something an ipod a blackberry a cell

I am now cooking three nights a week for Dorothy and I help her with errands as needed.
Her son is paying me now and though I said I didn't need the money Dorothy is thrilled now to be getting dinners!!!!

hugs, train

How sweet of you Donna I am sure Dorothy is thrilled with the meals you make her. And I know it makes you feel good money or no money.

Donna, that is a very kind thing for you to do. Dorothy is lucky to have a friend/neighbor like you.

Donna--My mom is 83 and lives alone. She has had wonderful neighbors since my Dad passed away 20 years ago. Even though they don't physically check on her everyday, they are aware of her routine and notice if they see anything that doesn't look quite right (like her lights aren't on when they should be) and then they either check on her or call one of us kids to let us know. I am so thankful to have someone close who cares about her.
I am glad you have worked out an arrangment that allows you to help Dorothy and gives her peace of mind that she is not taking without returning the favor. It is hard for some people to learn how to receive gifts when they have always been the ones giving. My dear aunt has a problem like that. Sometimes I have to gently remind her to just say "Thank You" and give someone else the gift of being able to help her.

Joy,
That is so nice that your mom has caring neighbors who check on her. I am sure that means a lot to you.

Now that her son is paying me, (even though I would have continued to bring her meals for free) Dorothy is much happier with my coming over and bringing food. Before she would say, I don't want you doing this, etc........
I like to cook anyway but now that I am getting paid I make sure it's a Really Good and healthy meal, and sometimes a sweet, too! She is 88 and doesn't want treats every time though because she is "watching her figure!!"
Believe me, when I am 88 I am going to eat all the cake I want! LOL!!!!

hugs, train

Donna like some one else said I am sure Dorothy "feels less like a charity" more or less now that she knows her son pays you something to help his Mom. Some as we get older find it hard to accept things when we were always the ones to do the helping etc. Hope that makes sense,
There are couple neighbors here that we all help each other in any way we can. One family well 2 stick to themselves don't even wave as they pass one of us on street or whatever. But the rest are great. Hope all are having a good week
