I'm planning a yard sale, too. I need to get rid of the rest of my brother-in-law's junk. I'll be waiting till after June. It seems I have things every weekend until July.

One way or the other I am definitely having a yard sale this year! My house is over run with stuff and I am just tired of taking care of it all. I am actually being brutal and getting rid of a lot of things - sentimental or not - as I have decided empty space is not a bad thing! And after all is said and done, I am going to work really hard on NOT refilling the empty space with new stuff!! And that is going to be a challenge.

I need to have one.
My Gramp and Brother moved in last month,
I'm lucky I can find the kitchen.
Since my house is only 900sq.ft. and my kitchen only measures 9x6.
It's a little tight in here.

I couldn't have said this better myself. I am actually looking forward to not having as much junk with this move. Believe me, there is still a lot more that I can get rid of.

I have learned one thing.... it is better to pay more for one good quality item than to have 5 cheap version of this item. Ex: most of my kitchen stuff is cheap. I am going to look into purchasing a good knife set ( instead of 15 mis-matched ones that wont cut butter), also, we were talking about a good peeler at MomsMenu.com ( FC's sister site). I could really use one of those. Nice plates and bowls and just a few cups--not like it is now. I am making this my summer "to do" project. I am going to organize my house better and keep weeding out the junk and slowly but surely replace it with better quality items.

Lightbulb Having a yard sale?

I am not having one, but our church is. We are doing something a little different !! I hope it works LOL. We are leaving the price up to the buyer with larger or more valuable items having a " lowest starting price". Our reason for doing this is because all monies are going toward our " Building Fund" and we thought people might be willing to give more this way.
What do some of you ladies think about this? I would love to hear from you.

I have done this at my sales before on big items. If I know that I want to sell something for a minimum of $25., I will put a sign on it for $35. and haggle with people. If they ask for a better price, I will say anything over $27.00. If they offer 28., you have still made more money than you originally wanted but if they say "Well, I'll give you $25. for it", you can still say ok and get the money that you want for it---and they think that they got a deal Sneaky, yes.....but it works

I know that many have done this to me as well.

Since you are doing this for a church though, I would do it the way you planned on doing it but make sure that everyone knows that the more they bid on something, the more they will be donating to your cause.

I will be 39 this week and this will be my first yard sale this weekend..kinda nervous. My sister is suppose to be brining her stuff and helping out but i'll believe it when i see it. I have been cleaning all weekend and sorting. Were putting the house up for sale in a couple of weeks. I cant believe all the stuff i have kept...It feels good to get rid of some of it though. So if anyone has any poineters just let me know...

Have lots of change on hand, keep some in the house, use a fanny pack or carpenters apron so the money is on you at all times. Have bags available to wrap breakables and to free hands of shoppers. Plastic grocery bags work well and are free.

Have lots of signs pointing the way to your sale if someone is having a sale a couple of blocks away make sure you have a sign pointing your way. Advertise in the paper in my paper for $22 you get 20-25 words and they give you yard signs and price stickers with a list of pointers to have a good sale.

To clean out more stuff group sell them 3/$ or 5/$ so they are buying groups instead of just one. Small items can be bagged together and sold as a set such as cake decorations or kids meal toys.

I don't price all items but make a sign with the prices (junior jeans $2, t-shirts $1) which saves me time in the garage sale prep end.

Have finger food for lunch made ahead so when it is slow you can run in and grab sandwiches and a drink to go back out.

Have help to keep an eye on those people who will try to take advantage of you by bait & switching or plan stealing. Even an older neighbor or teenager that is willing to be an extra set of eyes is helpful and they could bring some of their own items to sell.
