I was just reading the posts here...I watched my grandson Alex when my son would have him every second week...I never once told my son that I wanted to be paid to spend time with Alex...I would have Alex from the time he woke up in the mornings until the time he went to bed at son worked for a Security company,12 hour shifts...I loved the time I had with my grandson and never once felt like a babysitter...

My 2 cents worth: I've babysat for free for my grandkids. And I don't mind if its a once in a while thing. But I did watch my grandson for the first 3.5 yrs all the time, for free, and I did feel very taken advantage of. We bought food, diapers, toys etc and never got any kind of compensation. Or even offered anything for watching him. I think it was just assumed that I 'owe' this to my child to take care of hers for free. Right now we are watching our granddaughter but we get paid 2.00 an hour. I think it's important to pay the grandparent IF its a 'full time' job. If it's not for a night out then you should pay. It shouldn't cost me money on a weekly basis to have my grandkids here. I love them and I love having them around but they are not my financial responsibility. I do watch her for free on occasion. Yesterday is an example. My daughter bought a house and they moved yesterday. I took her all day Thursday while they did the closing and some moving and all day yesterday while they finished the big stuff. I did not charge for this. It was my way of 'helping them out' when I can.

I don't think it is right to expect the Grandparents to supply diapers, food, toys, etc. a daycare or babysitter would expect personal care items, lunch/snacks be brought everyday with the child.
