klcrn, how long have you been a nurse? I am interested in going to nursing school, but not sure. Do you really like it? I would imagine it is rewarding...job wise.

Whatever sayings u like, do not use "rule of thumb", please.

That saying originates from a law on the books stating that a man can use a STICK, as big around, but, not bigger, than his thumb, to WHIP his wife if she misbehaves. Hence, 'rule of thumb' came into play.

Be blessed,
Pray for our soldiers,

What a hoot! I just started reading "Standing in the Rainbow" by Fannie Flagg. It's a story about a town in Missouri from the 40's to today. I'm only a few pages into it and she reminded me of the term from my own Missouri childhood:

Gully washer. Which reminds me of an Arkansas term Toad croaker, both of which mean really hard rains.

I think I'm going to like this book very much.

I've been a nurse for 16 yrs. I'm not the one to ask about going into nursing tho....had a pretty rough time for a time with the "crap" that goes on and got very disillusioned (sp) for a while. I do have a job I like now so I'm feeling a lot better about things. The "nursing" part of the job can be very rewarding but there is a lot of other "stuff" you have to deal with...

Sorry to sound so negative!! Lots of bad memories!!

Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you would like...

Take care......

If you really have the desire to get into nursing--go for it. I was 45 when I did, and the thought of getting a chance to do something I had wanted since I was 14 made me feel ecstatic. It was a course for practical nursing, and I was scared to death the whole time. I was so afraid I wouldn't get through it, but I had so much "drive" then that NOTHING got in my way. When I passed my state boards I was on top of the world, and after returning to work, and getting used to things I absolutely was in Heaven. It was the most satisfying thing I ever could have done. I loved it. You may feel differently after getting in, but, at least, TRY.

So, my saying is:---"Better late than never".

I guess my biggest complaint at work was NOT ENOUGH HELP! And the next was, BOY, DO I HATE GETTING "PULLED"! I loved CHARTING, especially admission notes, because it gave me a chance to use medical terminology. I did see things which were not so nice, but I just did my work, and enjoyed it.

No, I don't remember the PT.--Clue me in, will you?

In all my years of working in hospitals (from Unit Clerk to Medical Records) I have nevver known anyone who liked getting pulled, myself included. It was like being sent to a foreign country. What was really awful though was when nurses got pulled from other floors to work in ICU and CCU--they were so out of their element and I felt very sorry for them. I loved it and hated being pulled to "regular" floors.

Thank you all for your input...I am definitely going to check into it, next week. I will definitely need to look into grants, as dh and I both have bad credit. Maybe I can get started with school, in the fall with the kids!!!!

Once I was sent to ER, from my own medical unit, and I was almost a basket case. Thankfully, after 15 minutes I was sent somewhere else.

Another time I was sent to pediatrics. I didn' mind the little ones, but things to be done there were very different from my own unit.

The head nurse from ER once told me she thought I ought to work in ER, and I told her she'd throw me out in 15 minutes! I do not do well in emergency situations.

Oh, yes, I wanted to add Blondie, I always wanted to be a scretary since I was about 10. Then around 16 I wanted to be a nurse, then it was time for vocational school my senior year, I wanted to go to the nurses aid course....my mom talked me out of it! So, now here I am and don't know what to do, how to get started, I feel so dumb. I do have the phone numbers for two nursing schools in my area!!! Again, thank your for the encouragement, you answered another question for me, if I am too old!!!! I am not!!!
