Smoking while pumping gas?

I was reading two different online newspapers published here in Florida: truancy and smoking while pumping. The first news story I read is about a parent who was put in jail because of her sonís truancy. The second news story I read is about a woman who blew up her car for smoking while pumping gas to her car and she was not ticketed for the incident. I am just scratching my head wondering if I must have missed something.

Smoking: http://www.local6.com/news/9979636/detail.html

I thought it was just common sense to not smoke when you are filling up with any fuel, and she did not get into trouble??

I have heard of parents being in trouble for their kids who are constant truants. I can drive past my ds1 high school and at 9am the kids are walking away from the school not towards it.

I used to work as a manager for a gas station. You wouldn't believe how many people smoked while pumping their gas.

Some would get soooo mad at me for telling them that they had to make a choice of smoking first or pumping the gas because they weren't allowed around the gas pumps with a cigarette.

Common sense goes out the window when it comes to things like this.

I guess not because I did not hear more about it other than that she did not get a ticket.

What I don't understand is why put the parents in jail because the student went the other way instead of staying in school. I mean, parent's don't have control over the student once they are drop at school.

I don't think people who smoke while pumping gas to thier car have any common sense at all. Does the owner of the gas establishment need to post a after effect of smoking while pumping? I sure hope not, which I think is a good idea.

There used to be signs all over gas stations in Pa. where I worked, warning that it was illegal and of the dangers. People ignored them.

I don't see the signs around NC gas stations that much, though.

To me, it's like telling someone that they shouldn't play in traffic.

We have signs at the pumps in Ga saying you shouldn't smoke or talk on your cell phone while pumping gas. And children under the age of 16 can't pump gas.

Yes Shelly
I have seen the under16 not allowed to put petrol in a car. My son does not liket this one he feels he's old enough, 15yo. Every petrol station here has a big multi sign of what you're NOT allowed to do, phones, smokes etc.

I get nervous when I see people smoking at the pump. I'd rather drive around the pumps a few times until they leave or put out the cigarette.
