Astronomers predict red moon during total lunar eclipse
Last Updated Wed, 27 Oct 2004 14:32:11 EDT
TORONTO - The full moon may turn a deep, reddish orange on Wednesday night, astronomers say.

If skies are clear, people can expect to see the colour change as the Earth's shadow falls over the face of the moon in a total lunar eclipse.

INDEPTH: Eclipse FAQ

Late Wednesday night, skygazers in North America will be able to watch the eclipse with the naked eye, although telescopes or binoculars will show more detail.

The orange and red light will appear as the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon.

Eclipses give scientists a chance to learn more about the quality of Earth's atmosphere, according to Fred Espenak, an astronomer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Wednesday's eclipse is expected to look more reddish because of the extra ash released by recent eruptions of Mount St. Helens in Washington.

Total lunar eclipses occur every couple of years or so.

The next such celestial display will not be until March 2007.

To watch the eclipse, look for a spot with an unobstructed view to the east. In North America, the total eclipse begins at 10:23 p.m. EDT and ends at 11:45 p.m. EDT.

The two DS and I went out to see it. DS # 1 even took his telescope out to get a better look.

Wierd/happy news..

Faith, a 4-year-old Rottweiler, phoned 911 when Beasley fell out of her wheelchair and barked urgently into the receiver until a dispatcher sent help. Then the service dog unlocked the front door for the police officer.

"I sensed there was a problem on the other end of the 911 call," said dispatcher Jenny Buchanan. "The dog was too persistent in barking directly into the phone receiver. I knew she was trying to tell me something."

Faith is trained to summon help by pushing a speed-dial button on the phone with her nose after taking the receiver off the hook, said her owner, Beasley, 45, who suffers grand mal seizures.

kinda neat////dogs are so smart!

A Second Term

George W. Bush declared victory yesterday in the race for president after a decisive national election that bolstered Republican strength in Congress and led the White House to proclaim that Mr. Bush had won a mandate from the American public for a second term.

Mr. Bush beamed as he stood with Vice President Dick Cheney at a rally in Washington four hours after accepting a concession call at the White House from Senator John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat who waged a fierce challenge to unseat him.

"We had a long night - and a great night,'' Mr. Bush said. "The voters turned out in record numbers and delivered an historic victory."

"America has spoken, and I'm humbled by the trust and the confidence of my fellow citizens," he said. "With that trust comes a duty to serve all Americans, and I will do my best to fulfill that duty every day as your president."

WEIRD NEWS

In Missouri, a man was having a pre-fourth of July party.
When his guests started shooting off his fireworks he
hid them in his oven.

Later, he decided to cook some lasagna for his guests,
turned the oven on and a few seconds later the oven
door flew off injuring his arm. A hole was blown through
the wall from the explosion…

See what ya get when ya let a man in the kitchen!…

What is happening in November?

November 11 -- Veterans Day
Originally Armistice Day, commemorating the signing of the agreement that ended World War I at 11:00 A.M., November 11, 1918, this federal holiday was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. At that time, it became a day to honor all the men and women who have served in the armed forces of the United States. Each year, special ceremonies are held at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.
