I made my own phonics game for my kids out of paper plates and both were reading between ages 3 & 4. They are now 10 & 7 and both still LOVE reading! My niece started Kindergarten this year unable to read. I made her a set of "phonics plates" at Christmas and her reading has improved 100%. I think anything that gets them interested in reading and makes them realize how FUN reading can be is a good thing, whether it's HOP or any other phonics game. Let me know if you want instructions for the plates. It's really an effective, inexpensive alternative to the commercial phonics products. Also, your older kids might get a kick out of helping make the plates and composing word lists. Good luck!

One of the main issue in teaching children is that each child has their own learning style. So one program may work great for one but not for another child. I bought H.O.P. at a garage sale for $10. It is the older style. It didn't come with the cute children books that they now have. I used it for a while but my child could not remember what those letters were "called". We have had better learning results with the soft ware program called I Love Phonics. I plan on continuing using H.O.P. also. Scholastic book club web site has been a huge help. They have teaching printables that help me get started with a teaching idea. The BOB books that they sell have also helped. Scholastic is very homeschool friendly. I pass out the monthly book orders to a few friend and we all order together. It has worked out well. The web has so much to offer you to compliment your teaching. Here are a few to get you started.

They do it's called Hooked on Math and you can order it on the web. Also, you might check ebay. Sometimes they have it up for auction over there.
