April Fools' Day Fun Activities

APRIL FOOLS' DAY "PAINT"
Secretly color vanilla pudding red (or any bright color) by stirring in drops of
food coloring. Tell your child that you have some new finger paint for her to try.
Have her wash her hands. Then place a spoonful of the red pudding on a large
piece of white paper and invite her to finger-paint designs with it. When she
discovers that the paint is really pudding, enjoy the sweet April Fools' Day joke
together.

UPSIDE DOWN AND TURNED AROUND
Plan simple games such as these for your child to enjoy. Turn a few objects
upside down, such as an empty wastebasket, a plastic cup, and a small stool.
Ask your child to search for the objects and turn them right side up.
Arrange several objects backward, such as a TV with its face to a wall, a chair
with its back to a table, and books with spines facing the back of a bookshelf.
Can your child identify the backward objects?
Play turn-around tricks, such as making a bed with the pillows at the foot instead
of the head, or changing the usual seating arrangement around your dining table.
When your child discovers the tricks, have a few April Fools' Day giggles
together.

APRIL FOOLS' DAY TALK
Take turns with your child making up silly sentences like these. Don't forget to
say "April fool!" after each one.

APRIL FOOLS' DAY FOOD FUN
Serve hamburgers for breakfast and cereal for dinner.
Put a piece of bread between two slices of cheese for a sandwich.
Eat dessert first, main dish last.

April Fool Nap Time
Last year we decided to mix up the day. We usually nap after lunch but
on April 1 we told them that we were napping early and had everyone get
their nap things out after breakfast. We turned off the lights, turned
on the resting music and started to rub backs. We did this for maybe 10
minutes and believe it or not, some of the kids fell asleep and no one
really protested a lot. We did finally say "April Fools!" and everyone
had a good laugh. After we put everything away, we talked about tricks
that were nice to play on people and ones that wouldn't be so nice.

Silly Week
During the week of April Fool's I do a Silly Theme Week each day of that week
is a different silly day ie. Silly Sock Day, Silly Hair Day, Silly Clothes Day, Silly
Shoes Day, Silly Face Day. Each day we do silly acivities to go with the theme
ie. make silly hats, eat silly snacks ie. chocolate pudding(mud pudding), ants on
a log ( celery with peanut butter or cheese whiz and raisins), silly hair dos (the
boys love this), paint silly faces, dress up in clown outfits in dress-up centre,
wear grown up shoes all day or sandals if its winter etc. You get the idea just
be a kid again and the imagination will flow.

Mixed up Holidays
What about a bunny pin with santa hat, green bunny with a beard, a flower that
squirts water,( the little rings you can by) all made into pins? napkin holders, hair
pieces, etc. also the flower could be made into a bouquet. instead of a chick in
the egg, maybe santa, or a chick in a pumpkin...

April fools here is a silly joke.

Knock, Knock
Who's There?
Egg
Egg who?
Egg-xactly who I Love.

Recipes & Snacks

Fooled You Frank: Put a banana in a hot dog bun. Mix 2 Tbs. peanut butter
with a couple of drops of red food coloring for "ketchup". Spread over
banana. Mix a little vanilla yogurt with yellow food coloring for "mustard".
Drizzle over hot dog.

Fundae: Scoop hot mashed potatoes into a sundae glass. Drizzle with hot
brown gravy and top with a cherry tomato.

Yolks-on-You: Spread a thin layer of vanilla pudding on a plate to look like
an egg white. Top with a canned-peach half to resemble a yolk. Serve with
cinnamon toast triangles.

Songs & Fingerplays

An April Fool! Sung to: " My Hat, It Has Three Corners"

If you like being silly and playing pranks at school.
It's best to wait for April, and be an April Fool!

I see a big black spider! He's walking on your shoe!
If you look down to see it, I'll say that I fooled you!

My friend told me his mother had climbed their apple tree,
But all I saw were branches; I guess the joke's on me!

Make sure your jokes are harmless, there's no need to be cruel.
This is the day it's OK to be an April Fool!

APRIL FOOLS' DAY ANIMAL SONG Tune: "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"
Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a cow. E-I-E-I-O.
With an oink, oink here, and an oink, oink there,
Here an oink, there an oink,
Everywhere an oink, oink.
Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.
Adapted Traditional

Continue singing about other April Fools' Day animals, such as a sheep that moos, a pig that neighs, a horse that quacks, and a duck that baas.

APRIL FOOL Tune: "Jingle Bells"
April fool, April fool,
April fool today.
You fool me and I fool you,
Then we laugh and say-
April fool, April fool!
It's so fun to play.
You fool me and I fool you.
That's how we play today. Elizabeth Scofield

April 1st finger play

Little bears have 3 feet (hold up 3 fingers)
Little birds have 4 feet (hold up 4 fingers)
Little cows have 2 feet (hold up 2fingers)
And girls & boys have more feet (hold up 5 fingers)
Do you believe my story? (point to yourself)
Do you believe my song? (point to yourself)
I'll tell you only once a year, when April comes along! (hold up 1 finger)
April Fools!

Last year I made an April's Fool dinner of mini meatloaves baked in muffin tins. I "frosted" them with mashed potatoes piped from a pastry bag, that were dyed with food coloring. I topped each one with a "cherry" of Ketchup..

Dessert was a layer cake deccorated to look like a hamburger. The ideas came from a woman's magazine..and it was a great hit with my family...

You're never too old to be an "April Fool"

April fools day is on a Saturday which means we can have lots of fun!

I received this from familytime.com

For kids to play on parents or brothers and sisters:
  1. Dig out the cobweb material from Halloween and "cobweb" Mom or Dad's shower.
  2. Add blue or red food coloring to the milk, or pour chocolate syrup in the milk carton and shake it up.
  3. Make ice cubes from water flavored with almond, peppermint, or orange extract. The ice will be colorless but "tasty!"
  4. Switch the sugar and salt. Put salt in the sugar bowl and sugar in the salt shaker.
  5. Wind rubber bands around the spray hose trigger on the kitchen sink and direct it outward. When Mom or Big Sis turns on the faucet, she will get a spray of water.
  6. Leave Mom or Dad a phone message with the number of the local dump. Tell them "Mr. Trasher" called.
  7. Hard boil the eggs in the egg carton. When Mom or Dad tries to make breakfast, observe their dismay.
  8. Short sheet Mom and Dad's bed. It's an old trick, but one that always gets them going!
  9. Scatter plastic spiders or insects over Mom's pillow, or put a fake "dead mouse" in her shoe.
For parents to play on kids:
  1. In the middle of the night, carry sleeping kids into each other's rooms so that they wake up in the wrong beds.
  2. Using loose stitches, sew together your kids' socks or underwear.
  3. Wake the kids up an hour early. Reset the clocks but don't tell them until they're up and dressed. With the extra time, plan a family breakfast (check out the eggs before you make scrambled eggs! See number 6 above.)
  4. Scrape the white icing from sandwich cookies and replace it with white toothpaste. Serve some of these "treats" as snacks.
  5. Insert gummy worms in sandwiches. Let a slimy looking tail or head protrude from the side of the bread.
  6. Glue quarters and dimes on the walkway the kids use when leaving the house in the morning. Watch them try to pick up the "found money."
Dream up your own April Fools jokes. It's fun to plan an ambush for Dad, or a goofy trick to play on the kids. Laugh a lot - don't let the day go by without at least one good prank!

Love & Prayers,
Linda
