My diagnosis and treatment was confirmed by a spinal tap. Am sure that this has been done for your husband, have you been given the results. Prayers to you and your family for strength and comfort.

I too contacted viral menengitis about 4 yrs ago, I was 42, it was pretty bad. I went to the hospital with a horrible, horrible headache, neck pain, nausea then was sent home with pain pills after a spinal was done. They said nothing was there, next night went back to hospital, again was sent home by that time I could barely walk due to the pain. Next morning was sent to a neuroligist he sent me right to the hospital. I was in there for 4 days, came home. Just felt extremly tired, still having headaches but not so bad. They gave me lots of steroids. Then I had a horrible experience with my eyesight, I almost went blind, woke up one morning & I could't see, immediately went to a eye specialist, he said my eye pressure was very very high, had to see him everyday for 1 week. Then every other day, & so on until I was okay. So even after your husband gets home, keep a close eye on him for any other sysmtoms, if anything looks serious call you doctor. I suffer now from migrains, & I know my eyesight suffered also. I have to have eyes checked once a year for glacoma. I had never heard of this disease, I will pray for you, it will take a few weeks of lots of rest. Good Luck & God Bless you & your family.

I raised the roof at that hospital yesterday. My husband is not getting better. He white blood cell count goes up every day which means there is a bad infection. He is barely coherent anymore and is not cooperating with the nurses and staff. None of these things are in his normal character. They have decided to run some new test and give him a sychological evaluation. I just want my husband back. We are praying for him all the time.

Have you given any thought to a second medical opinion?! I'm sure that they have probably done a spinal tap, but you haven't said so. This is how I was diagnosed and I was given very high powered antiobiotic by IV for 3-4 days. Then antibiotics by mouth. Was in hospital for about 10 days. Please keep us posted on his condition and my prayers are with you and the family!

My husband came home today. He is not a well man yet. His infection count in his spine is 120 which is very high but it was 303. They have given him the antibiotics and anti-viral medication.
They have given him every test known to man short of a brain biopsy. They say if his count does not keep going down then that will be the next test done. I trully believe that my husband was personally touched by the God. It is hard for him to see just how blessed he is because he still sees himself as a sick man. I know we have won the battle but we still have to finish fighting the war. Oh, by the way, my 14 yr old son know how the chicken pox. When it rains, it pours. Only with God's help am I able to deal with my husbands sickness, my son's sickness and two little ones too.

You can do it! Your family needs you so much right now, I know it must be extremly hard with your husband being so very ill & now your son, but at least your son is a little older than maybe a toddler or a baby. Like I wrote before, it will take lots of patience & time for your husband to get well, but at least you have him home now, I know it was probably very difficult to be going back & forth to the hospital, especially with your children at home. God doesn't give us more than we can handle, and you sound like a very devoted wife & mother. I will certainly have you in my thoughts & prayers for all your family. Keep a very very close eye on your husband, he will be EXTREMLY tired, I know just to get up & take a shower was so exhausting for me at that time. Even after I came home, about 2 wks later I had to go back for another spinal, because I still felt so bad. If it wasn't for my MIL I don't know what I would have done, I also had 3 children at home. My employer was good to me, he said not to worry about anything, even when I went back to work, I could only work 1/2 a day for a couple of weeks, until my strength came back somewhat more normal. I was out of work for 2 months, then I went to the 1/2 days scheldule. Tell your husband he is lucky to be with his family, it could have been worse.....just think if it would have happened to one of your children. You've got to have faith in the Lord, he will take care of your family, your husband will get well. Keep writing to keep me posted.

This may or may not be a relevant bit of information, but when I had viral menengitis/encephalitis, was told by the doctor that it was caused by the same virus (HERPES SIMPLEX) that causes cold sores and chicken pox. Was also told after my recovery not to be around anyone with chicken pox. Now that your son has the chicken pox, this may be a fact that you want to relate to your husband's doctors. I don't profess to have any medical knowledge, but it might be worth pursuing!! It certainly was a prime factor in my treatment and recovery. Keep us posted on your husband's condition! You are in my thoughts!
PS: Was also told that this condition was aggravated by stress!!

Thank You All for your thoughts and prayers. My husbands virus is still unknown. They ran it through the national data bank for viruses and came up empty. I am sure it is not the herpes kind but I will be sure to tell his Dr. about my son having the chicken pox anyway. I am keeping them in seperate parts of the house to try and be safe. My poor son was home alone for 2 days with the pox while I was at the hospital. He is 14 and very responsible. I had my two little ones at different locations. My daughter with the neighbor and my son with in-laws. I am so glad that I have all my eggs in one basket again. Being seperated was very hard on my daughter. She is 5 and she told me lastnight that she is so glad to be home. God will take care of us, this I know!

We are nearing the two year mark since my husband became deathly ill. First, I would like to thank the members of Family Corner for all thier kind words and support that helped me through the worst time of his illness Second, I wanted to give a update on him. The illness that he had was meningoencephalitis. To break that done...It started with viral meningitas, then it broke through the protective layers that covers the brain and entered in his brain and caused swelling and bleeding in the brain.
Almost two yrs later he is walking and talking and for the most part, being himself. It has left him with some nuerological problems though. He has seizures which are almost under control with the help of medicine. He has dementia which is what alheimers does to people's memory except his is not progressive. He takes alheimer's medicine to help with that. He has static balance problems....walks fine but when standing still, he falls backward.
Even with his medical problems, I feel that life is good. I am blessed to have him and my children are blessed to have him. God has taken care of our family!! One day at a timing it....Kim
