Cold/flu prevention

What works best for you in helping to prevent colds and flu? (Or lessen their duration when you do get sick?)

hugs,train

Hi Train

We don't get colds and flus here often or if we do they are usually not very severe.

I make sure we wash our hands often. Especially when out and about.

We take multivitamins, eat nutritious foods (most of the time) and get enough rest.

I always try to have oranges and/or orange juice during the winter for the added vitamin C.

Also, I believe we all need a little fresh air everyday!. Most days I like to open doors and windows for a little while (depends on the weather) to let the stale air out and fresh air in. When it is -30C it sure airs out fast hehe.

PS When I go on one of my numerous diets I seem to let my resistance down and catch a cold of some sort. Guess I am healther fat

Hummingbird

I really don't have a set time that I leave my doors open for. I live in Central Canada so we can get some pretty wicked winter weather sometimes.

My usual is when I feel and smell the fresh air through out the house or when I start to feel cold. Probably 15 minutes the most.

We do leave a window open a bit all day or night in the master bedroom when the temp is above -20C. I like to sleep in a cool, fresh bedroom under a bunch of blankets.

dh and I take one a day vitamins and dd takes a children's chewable. Ask your doctor what s/he recommends. I heard centrum was good as well.

I also like to open the doors for a couple of minutes a day. It gets the stuffiness out of here.

We have been sick with this darn stomach virus that is going around our area. It started with my DS the day before Christmas Eve, went to me Christmas Eve around 11:30 pm and continued for 2 days, my DH got it the day after Christmas early in the a.m. and came home from work early. UGH!!!

We finally bundled everyone up yesterday and went out for a bit. I think it did us all some good to get out of the house.

cold/flu

I am a firm believer in vitamins! I take some "power paks" that my wellness doctor got me started on! & If I start feeling sick, I take some echinacea. It seems to work for me!

Yup, I leave the door open in the evenings for fresh air.
I and DH take multi vitamin tabs and an additional calcium supplement as both our families have a lot of bone strength problems with age.
Both my DDs get those Flintstone vitamins and and additional calcium supplement (that are made to look like gummy bears).

We do drink a lot of fruit juices too but I think the thing that most helped us is to take the flu shots every single year.
Before the flu shots and vitamins you could have called us the 'flu family' -- we were that susceptible!

My husband's Ear Nose and Throat doctor recommend frequent flushing of the nasal passages with saline solution. We find it works quite nicely.
