Anyone With Eye Problems?
I had eye surgery a few years ago for Detached Retina. After several operations they still were unable to fix it. Has anyone else had the same problem? Don't realize how important sight is until you lose it. Glad I have my computer it helps keep in touch with everyone. Sueanne

Retinal detachment surgery
I am so sorry to hear of your retinal problem. Evidently, the retina was completely detached when you had your surgery. Did you get a second opinion.
I had retinal surgery in both eyes & it was successful but my retinas had just begin to detach & the DR operated immediately.

I hope something can be done for you.

Retina Detachment Groups
Hello Sylvia, Thank you for answering my post. Glad to hear yours was successful. Mine tore first that was the problem. Went to the Doctor the next day and they froze the tear. What happen when it healed it peeled back the retina like wall paper. Was a shock after 3 months for that to happen. Each time I had it done only lasted 6 weeks. After the third try we had to call it quits.

At first it was hard adjusting since it left me light sensitive. It has been six years now so I try to just go on. Every year a new doctor tries to build my hopes that they can fix it, but all they do is take my money and back out.

Having a computer for the last couple of years has been great. I use a glare filter over the screen that helps defuse the glare. There is a chat group on just for people with Retina Problems. Check this site out very important advice. Sueanne

Hi Sueanne,

Was your detached retina due to an accident or do they think it is hereditary? We went through this with my father several years ago. We don't have a history of detached retinas but the doctor said it was inherited, since my dad didn't have any head injuries that would have caused it. He was having black spots and flurries before his eyes for a few days, and then suddenly his vision was halfway blocked in one eye. He described it as a black film that he couldn't see through. He was in Costa Rica when it happened, and the docs sent him here for emergency surgery. I literally picked him up from the airport and went straight to the hospital. Just like you said, he too tried different operations and even different eyeglass prescriptions. Cost him a lot of $$, but to no avail. He said he has just learned to see with one good eye. They tried for years after everything he has been through to tell him that there are new surgeries that can help him, but he has come to accept the fact that there probably really aren't. He is tired of the false hopes--and after everything he has been through, I don't blame him a bit.

If you don't mind, could you let me know what they thought caused yours? I am just curious, as we have tried so many things and I am wondering if they had some different thoughts as to what might have caused yours. Thanks!!

Take Care,

Detached Retina
Hi Debbie,It probably is inherited for me too. I was having flashes for a while but the eye doctor did not send me to a retina specialist. I had just moved to Florida so had no idea what eye trouble was all about. Did not have an accident just happened one night while I was cooking dinner. Saw everything red colored in that eye. In the morning called my doctor he said was not capable to take care of it. He had taken care of my Husband with cataracts and he did well.

Sent me to Orlando to a doctor there. The funny thing is they never send you to a local doctor it would be too easy. Found out it had torn and the blood was seeping in. The Doctor froze the eye and stopped the bleeding. Did not detach until I went to the first Doctor again after they put drops in my eyes. The next day it detached. Never heard from him again until after I had my forth surgery. Got a call he wanted to see me. Had the nerve to say " I needed help did not know when to give up". After a few words to him he told me not to come back anymore. lol

Have had to accept what has happened to me and go on with my life. Took time adjusting to everything, know when I am tired to rest. Hope your Father is doing well. When you hear the problems other people have we can survive with this.

unfortunately, retina problems are 'special' and can't be treated by general eye doctors as a rule. flashes and flurries are really something that needs attention and the first medical provider probably could have either referred you immediately or at least tried to look to see if there was something wrong or advised immediate consult if things got worse.

also unfortunately, unless caught early, the consequences are not the most favorable. there are lots of new things but the results are still not the best.

fortunately, there are more support groups out there, and more external help that can be obtained (low vision aids -- many are available online!).

fortunately, there is increased awareness when one eye goes, so one is more vigilant for the next eye.

take care!

The real problem is that there are only a few doctors that specialize in Retina problems. The doctor I was going to did cataract surgeries for my husband with no problems. They always kept telling me my eyes were fine.

Once one doctor operates on you another is afraid to remedy someone elses work. I even had the best that taught the procedure to other doctors. What really happens scar tissues start growing over other parts of your eye rapidly at times causing more problems.

I know what to expect so I will be vigilant with my good eye. I am just trying to let everyone know what to look for and where to go. Hopefully someone will learn from this. Sueanne

Doctors Visit Today
Knew this day was coming. Starting to have trouble this morning in my good eye. Called this morning the specialist that has been monitoring this eye. Will have an afternoon visit. Hopefully nothing is serious. If I don't come on for awhile it was. Say a prayer for me. Sueanne:confused:
