shocking High Blood Pressure?

Anyone here suffer from high blood pressure? What meds do you know about and are you satisfied with it/them?

My Dad had hbp and died at the age of 47 after a stroke. I am now 44. Never personally had a problem with it until I had children (during pregnancy). Now I have it chronic.

I've tried labetalol ....rats, I've tried or been prescribed three others, none of which I can remember at this point but they begin with "D", "T" and "V"

Anyway, I know I need it because today at the Dr's office (on a work-related injury) they measured my bp and it was 152/110!

TIA

LuAnn..you are right that is high....120/80 is the norm high...I have hbp and am on several meds..but I also have coronary heart disease and renal problems..renal problems can make your bp zoom...right now I take Benicar, Atenolol, Sular and then also Plavix to thin my blood and Iron because my hemo is very low..
Also any pain..even a sprained ankle ..can make your bp go up....you should really see a Md and go from there...When mine went up 3 yrs ago, I ended up with a triple bypass..my clogged arteries in my heart were the culprits...the next time it went way out of control I had clogged arteries in my kidneys and ended up having stents put in those... so what I am saying is you have to find out WHY yours is going up...and what can be done about it....not doing that will cause you to have a stroke....or something else....
I see a Cardiologist and a Nephrologist regularly besides my primary Doctor....
simple blood tests can show your Doctor a slew of things that will aid him in helping you keep it under control....I am 76..mine is under control and I am doing fine...you will do well also....just seek help....hugs..

I'm 35 and have high blood pressure. I was found totally by accident, I was in for another problem and my bp was very very high.

Anyways, I take cozaar daily and it has worked wonderfully.

My bp used to be normally low, 118/68 after walking into the drs office, but since I gained weight it is high, for me at least, 124/82.

The second number is the diastolic pressure. When the artery is supposed to be relaxed and open, mine is beginning to be closed and that is why I see a rise now. The doctor has ordered a statin which is not a bp drug but a cholesterol lowering drug. But if it helps clear my arteries of cholesterol clogs than it will probably help my bp too.

The first number is the systolic pressure. When the heart pumps the blood out to the body it rapidly expands the artery. If the artery is clogged and brittle then the artery won't expand as well and there is back pressure on the heart.

Both of your numbers are 'high' so you will want to seek medical attention to see what is causing the high bp and solve the problem where it begins.

A single reading is not good enough. You need multiple readings to determine high bp. Sounds like you do need to keep track of this and get some dr attention again.

High bp really wears down your circulation system and the person too!

I've had it..

I've had it forever..I was diagosed with it at 3yrs old...at a peds visit...after that i was dragged to every specialist around...I got scared reading your post because I've had it for 30yrs. I usually don't take it seriously until I hear stories like yours

I had it under control for years using LISINOPRIL..but once I got pregnant and was taken off it <its toxic to a baby> I never got it
back under control...I've taken alot of other meds since but I can't get it under 140/90

Your BP was probably extra high because you got hurt and you had a thousand things running around in your mind...

I see an endrocrinologist for my BP, I have essential hypertension which means there is no known cause for it...schedule a physical
sometimes the silliest things make your BP go through the roof, <eg>sports drinks sandwich meats, nasal sprays

Nancy..I monitor mine daily...you are right about the sandwich meats...very high in sodium...I have made a lot of changes but do "fall off the salt free diet" sometimes...a trip to the Chinese buffet will send it reaching for the sky...so 2x a yr is too many times for me....it is hard staying on a diet that is low sodium and low fat...but I do my best to adhere to it...

I have had HBP for about 9 years throughout the entire time I have taken and still do, Univasc a Ace Inhibitor. It's very expensive even with Insurance it's $50.00 a month but.... it works very well. I went to the doctor last week and my reading was 120/70.

I do watch the salty foods, in fact my dh had quite a search this weekend finding any salt in our house. I eat chips but very little and we never salt our food.

Luann,

I too have high bp..I take Atacand for it. It keeps it under control...I was 46 when they gave it to me, for migraine headaches..I could not tolerate the reg. migraine meds..

If I get in pain, physical or mental pain..my pressure goes up..as it does with most people. lol

I have also been on statins for years, for high cholesterol runs in my family, and I used to not eat right..too much bakery!!! lol

Hugs, Janet

Lightbulb A tip

Put some black pepper in your salt shaker
since you have the visual of the black flakes
your won't be as likely to over do it =0)

I guess thats the one thing about having HBP
so long I never learned to like salty things...

although once in a blue moon chips sound
good...but the trigger a massive headache
so its not too often

That reminds me its time for a checkup too

This one seems to be working well.
