The thrifty plan is for people on food stamps. Woo-hoo!! I hate to admit it, but we've had food stamps for a few months now and I've done way better than that lol!! Of course, the first thing I did was stock my pantry(GFS and Sav-a-Lot, plus a trip to Sam's Club) and my freezer(local butcher with amazing deals). I haven't had to really shop for a long time. One thing I am grateful for is the fact that we are eating much healthier now--we get almost $500 a month, whereas I was only spending $35 or so a week when dh was working.

I am very glad to have found this thread. I am having a pretty hard time getting our food budget under control. This was very helpful.

Cooking form scratch has really helped me a lot. I too was raised by a non-cook, so we've had a lot of trial and error with this. But, I am getting the hang of it.

I agree with the comment about leaning on carbs too much when trying to cut food cost. I am soooo guilty of this. It is not good for you, my enlarging waist line can testify to this. But, I feel it is very hard to eat healthy and not break the bank. I'd love some input on how ya'll keep it low cost and good for you.

Planning meals around sales and coupons really help out with the budget. Having a plan also helps to avoid convenience foods.
