Grocery Challenge August 2007

How did you do in July? Can you "beat your total?" Or are the higher prices starting to make the Grocery Challenge even more challenging? (I know that's the case with me!)

Join our Grocery Challenge for August as we support each other in ways to keep our food bills down and our families well-nourished :)

Lizzie-boo 08-01-2007 05:52 AM

You nailed it, Barb! I'm going to try to beat my total, but I'm noticing that higher prices are making this more challenging than I guessed.

Luckily, my freezer is now pretty well stocked with basics, so I'm going to try to restrain myself from buying anything more to put in the freezer this month and make an effort to use what I have first.

Both DH and DS will be gone for about a week (at the same time, but to different places) so I'll be on my own for that period, and I'll take that opportunity to cook some things that only I like.

Count me in, I did terrible in July but should do better this month. With me going in for surgery dh will only buy what is on the list. I'm trying to come in between $550.and $600.00. I know it is alot but it includes all cleaninf supplies and paper goods and the dog food..I told hd that he & I are dieting so maybe that will help:sillll:

barbszy 08-01-2007 08:19 AM

There are almost 5 full weeks in August so I will budget $550. Hopefully this will also get us through the brunch for 20+ that we are hosting this Sunday!

ellenmelon 08-01-2007 08:26 AM

I am going to try for $650 which includes household supplies, etc. Whatever I buy at the grocery stores, even if its birthday cards.

mindybean 08-01-2007 10:43 AM

I'm going to shoot for $550. This will include groceries, dog & cat food, cleaning & laundry supplies, & Costco purchases...oh, I don't think this is going to be easy for me. Maybe I'll just try to stay away from the store! I'm planning a freezer cooking session this month so maybe I can find some good sales on meat so that I don't spend too much on the ingredients for the session. I have a lot of things in the freezer & the pantry that I can use for the session so maybe it won't be too bad. I know I have an almost full 6 lb bag of chicken breasts in the freezer but I'm out of ground beef after today.

Now I just have to remember to add up my receipts.

jeandeanette 08-01-2007 11:58 AM

Well I have never made my limit yet but like with dieting I just keep on trying. I will have to buy my son food to take back to college but I will set it for 500.00 again. I told my husband how much we are spending on food and he wasn't happy. I do believe the prices rising have made a big difference for us all.

jrztomato 08-01-2007 12:17 PM

Actually I did better in July than in June and ended up with a plus 19.01..so that will be added to this month's average...

Lost track of expenses during July, but I didn't spend much time at the supermarket.
I'll try harder in August.

RobertaD - wow that is so great!

I cut coupons out and then weeded out the old ones and it made me ill to see the ones on items I didn't use because I didn't have the box with me!

Could someone please post again that address for expired coupons to send overseas?

A big shop today, hopefully the main requirements for at least two weeks! Spent $195-00, still have some meat from last month and some fruit and veg from last week. Some of todays costs were for mum's party tomorrow.
I am trying to stay under $500- for the month. We'll see!

Lizzie-boo 08-03-2007 04:44 AM

Ellen,
I know what you mean about the coupons. I periodically clear out my container and bemoan the items I've purchased but didn't use the coupons I had already clipped only because I didn't take them with me. Sigh!

I have to head to the store in a little bit as we're having company tomorrow and I need a few things. I'll check in later with my total.

Liz

barbszy 08-03-2007 07:32 AM

Started with $550; in the past 2 days I have been to:
ShopRite (83.68)
Acme (12.13)
Costco (35.80)
Wegmans (29.80)

which leaves me $388.59 for the rest of the month. And I haven't even gotten the breakfast meat for Sunday's brunch--so I may not make it under budget this time!

jrztomato 08-03-2007 09:13 AM

Had to run out for 3 bd presents so picked a few groceries while I was oul.....

Okay, here we go for August:

Goal $550 or under
Walmart: $15.28
Weis: $43.73
Balance remaining: $490.99

They had lots of tempting good deals at Weis this week -- lots of $1.00 items, so I bought a few. My receipt says I saved $14.50 so that's encouraging.

So Barb, what's on the menu for the brunch. You said earlier that your DH is making his specialties. What does he like to make?

Liz

barbszy 08-03-2007 09:43 AM

OK, here's our brunch deal.
We will probably have at least 20 people here. Of those, most are adults/teens.

I will be making:
Hash Brown Casserole
Blueberry Muffins
Coffee

DH will be making:
Pancakes
Breakfast sausage (he puts these in a grill basket and grills them! Then I keep them warm in a Nesco)
Scrambled eggs
Possibly, eggs to order OR eggs Benedict (if I can get my hands on some Canadian bacon)

We tag-team this breakfast. I make sure the kitchen is clean, table is clear, and DH can find everything. I make the muffins, start the casserole in a Nesco, and get the coffee urn set up. Meanwhile DH will go to church early. When he gets home I will get ready for church and he will start the rest of the cooking.

It actually won't be "breakfast" as most of us attend noon Mass so we won't be starting until about 1 or 1:30! But we can eat breakfast anytime :)

kathymac 08-03-2007 10:42 AM

My goal for August is $550.00. This will feed two adults, two very hungry teenage girls, a pet mouse and a 90 lb. chocolate lab. This will also include all cleaning supplies. I went over my July goal by $70.00 but I still feel like I made some progress. My July goal was $100.00 less than my June goal, and food prices are definitely going up.

I have been working much harder to keep an up-to-date inventory, menu planning and making sure we use up everything that we buy.

Thanks for keeping me motivated!

Kathy

Lizzie-boo 08-03-2007 11:04 AM

Barb,
The menu sounds fabulous! I agree that breakfast food tastes good any time of the day.

Kathy,
I agree that even though I haven't spent less than my goal, this challenge helps me to be more aware of how much I'm spending and what I'm buying. We're also more aware about actually using all that we purchase, so that's a good thing, too.

Liz

mindybean 08-03-2007 12:21 PM

Woo-hoo! It's day 3 & I haven't been to the store yet. I would like to wait until next Thursday when dh gets paid, but I'm not going to make it. We'll be out of milk in a couple of days & I'm running low on cheese & a few other staples. I've been doing a lot of laundry the last few days also so I'm going to need more laundry supplies soon. Maybe I'll just do a necessities only run this weekend and wait until the end of next week for a full-out shopping trip.

Goal - $550
Spent - $0
Remaining - $550

jeandeanette 08-03-2007 05:35 PM

Spent 142.30 at wm and 42 cents at Food city.

I sent dd to the store yesterday for lunchmeat, wraps, milk as we had nothing home. I'm making a list for dh this week and hope to feel well enough to do an Aldi's run next week.

8/1/03
Goal- $600.00
Ultra-$20.00

Lizzie-boo 08-05-2007 08:02 PM

I resisted the urge to go to the grocery store today. DH's brother, the brother's wife, and three of their four kids were visiting from Toronto. We all went out to dinner last night, but they were coming to our house today for lunch. I scrounged around and decided that I had enough food to adequately provide lunch today, so we ate out of the refrigerator and pantry. No extra money spent! Yippee!

Liz

mindybean 08-06-2007 05:47 AM

DH & dd's went to the grocery store yesterday for some staples (& some extras since the kids were along). He spent $36.74.

Budget - $550
Spent - $36.74
Remaining - $513.26

I need to make a trip to Walmart for laundry det, Shout gel, bleach, a few groceries, and some school supplies. Not sure if I'll do it today, I don't like going to Walmart. I really need to make a trip to Costco, but we're leaving Friday to go camping for the weekend so I'm not sure when I'll make it. DH gets paid Thursday so I can't go to Costco before then. Walmart & Costco will put a major dent in my budget.

cau 08-06-2007 12:05 PM

Yesterday was dgd's 10th b-day and I was bring the sheet cake for the family reunion. Of course Sam's was out of sheet cakes so I ended up with a big round one for !4.88 and a big box of cupcakes for !4.Today dd invited her sisters over to celebrate Cass' b-day dinner. So a trip to Ultra for a family pack of smoked sausage & corn on the cob. Expensive weekend

Sam's_$30.
Ultra-$10.
Goal $600.00
Spent so far-$173.23

Only $426.77 to last the rest of the month.

I need milk and bread today and maybe a couple of other bits. It's the bits that add up! I will try and stay under $30-00 for today. Haven't had to buy meat this month yet, there was left over last month and it's still going.

Lizzie-boo 08-08-2007 03:44 PM

Went to the grocery store, so I'll update my totals too:
