polymer clay ???

I am really new to this polymer clay and am having a horrible time understanding the wire needs for the armatures. I am wanting to make figurines but it's calling for 14 gauge wire (which is coat hanger wire, but do they even make these type hangers anymore?) Also long bendable brass rods, thin brass rods and 18 gauge copper or steel wire? What does all of this mean and how come I cannot find any of this type wire or rods on any of the clay websites? Someone has sent me the website of www.glassattic.com but it so much information but was very intimidating....anyone out there with any solutions or ideas about these wires? I would appreciate the help. TIA
Elaine
