Cabbage butterfly/worms

I can't remember where I heard this before, but has anyone tried covering the growing heads of cabbages, cauliflower and broccoli with pantihose to keep the butterflies from laying eggs on them?

I want to try this soon, when the cabbages are ready, but I wonder if the pantihose will stunt the growth.

Anyone done this before?

Hi, We've never used pantyhose before, but to me, it seems like that'd be very similar to floating row covers, which we do use. I think as long as it's "breathable" enough, and lets in sunshine , it'd be good. I am wondering how you'll get pantyhose wide enough to cover a bed of cabbage; will you be sewing them together?

Good luck with it, and I'd be interested to know if that works!

Hi Teresa

I will be using parts of the pantihose to cover each head individually. I am not going to do it to all my cabbages, but will try one or two this year to see how it works.

I will keep you posted

Ahhh, now I can visualize it!

Can't wait to hear how it works out for you (and I hope it works out great!).
