I also posted this in the scouting forum, but thought I would put it here as well, just in case! ;-)
I am the den leader for my son's cub scout den. We have about 12 boys and they are 3rd grade (8-9 yr olds). We need to make centerpieces for the "Blue & Gold" dinner coming up in a couple of weeks. We have decided on a patriotic theme and need to make one for each boy to put on their table. If anyone has any suggestions on inexpensive craft ideas I would really appreciate any input!
I'm not sure if this is a "boys" craft or not - but, what about the new safety pin crafts lots of kids seem to be making? A friend of ours (9 yrs. old) made both of my girls flags with the safety pins and red, white and blue beads - we put them on their backpacks. They are really cute. http://www.makingfriends.com/index.htm has lots of free patterns for safety pin crafts and I'm sure I saw a flag there.
Following is a craft we did at cub scout camp (sorry I don't have a pciture):
Pattern for US Flag
12 blue pony beads
58 white pony beads
40 red pony beads
11 white craft strings 10 " long
1 dowel rod or pencil
loop string around the rod/pencil with both sides being equal.
Put the first row bead on both strings,
alternate the beads as instructed below.
When row is finished tie a knot in the string.
