I finally looked at this thread and laughed too! Actually in the days far, far back they used to not allow women to do much of anything during their 'monthly'-thought it was bad luck to have them around the general population even-of course that was mostly Indians from what I've read. But even non-Indians would not go near their wives during their flow and didn't want their wives, daughters, sisters or mothers touching anything of theirs while they were 'unclean!!'
But we all know that it really is an old wife's tale, mostly......but there is no way to explain what happened to you and your sil Minny-or is there????

Old wives tale or not, it happened! Some of those old wives tales seem to be true, but I think for the most part, they are just that.. old wives tales. All I know is I worked from 7 am til 10 pm that nite & had to dump the whole mess out the next morning. I've never canned another thing since. I wouldn't even let her help me pick them LOL. From then on I froze everything.

I know for a fact that I have helped my Mom can many times and for sure had my period during many of the sessions and none went bad.
I will take what I am served knowing someone out there is being served MUCH less

Period or not, sometimes I have tomatoes that are going to spoil and no time to can. I wash them, cut them up and put them in freezer bags and freeze til later. Works like a charm. something nice about canning in Jan. instead of those hectic last days of summer or fall

Happy face

A few years back I worked in the kitchen of a resturant.
Everytime I would put my hands in the dill pickle container and I was going through my
monthly cycle they would go bad overnight.

Never heard of the tomatoe thing, however.

I grew up hearing not to do ANY canning during your period. For myself it wasn't true, not to say that maybe some peoples systems cause some kind of spoilage reaction. I have an Aunt that I used to help can and that old wives tale got me out of canning peaches one year. I was a teenager then and highly approved.
