Well, the way we always do it is picking something out beforehand to give to them that night. This is the perfect time to give them those fuzzy slippers, new pajamas, or cuddly new doll.
Or, if you want them to feel like they got to choose, you can find really big boxes and wrap something silly in them, so when they pick out the biggest gift you can say "Well... ok, I guess" and then get a real laugh out of it!

T. M. Rezabek I think it is really neat. About 10 years ago my oldest boy was going through a phase, he was 12, and he said he wanted coal. Well, I found a store that sold candy that really did look like coal and tasted like licorice. Now a lot of stores sell it but it doesn't really look like coal. This really looked like a big chunk of coal. He thought it was the neatest thing his mom ever did. He tells the story and tells people that his mom really did try to give them EVERYTHING they ever asked for.
So, no offense here.
