Anyone want to walk a marathon with me?
I got a treadmill for my birthday and I got an idea from my DS Scholastic News magazine that he brought home from school. Elementary school kids in TX are in a program called Marathon Kids. Participants run or walk short distances at a time ( over a 6 month time period) until they complete the distance of 26miles and 385yrds ( the length of a marathon) When they complete the final mile, they will receive medals.
I thought, hey, I can do that! I'm inviting anyone to join me begining Monday, May, 1st in the Family Corner Marathon. The rules are simple:
*Join on this thread by posting your name.
*On May 1st, start recording distances that
you walk( either on a treadmill or elsewhere)
*I do realize that you and I will have to estimate at times, just try to be as accurate and
fair as possible.
* Only record the distance that you walk as it
applies to a concious effort to exercise. By
this I mean: Some people may walk alot
during the day at their jobs, etc. Do Not
count this toward the marathon. Only
cardiovascular activity can be recorded.
* If you decide not to complete the marathon
for whatever reason, please post here.
* The first person to complete the marathon
will receive a prize from me. If I win, I'll
award the prize to the 1st runner up.
* When you complete the marathon, continue
to visit this thread to cheer all the
participants across the finish line.
* If there is enough interest, a new
marathon will begin after everyone crosses
the finish line. That is why it is so
important to let us know if you choose not
to finish.
* Have fun and remember, If we finish, we
will all be winners.
I would love to have some input from you guys on this. Do the rules seem fair, clear, etc? Does it sound like fun? Is it an achievable goal?
Post your thoughts here and tell your friends to join us!
Kelly

I dont have a treadmill but this sounds like a motivator for me to walk at night if that would count? Sounds like a great idea...

Ellen, Connie, and Kim....glad you all are interested. Kim...your nightly walks would certainly count! I will be walking outside some myself, not all on the treadmill. I am taking my cub scouts camping this weekend and have a 3 mile hike planned. Of course, I can't count that since the marathon doesn't start until Mon.

I am trying to get my dd to do this too... I know she isn't a member and I can imagine her walking that far with the JRA and all the trouble she has had with it BUT if it would get her walking.... it would be worth it.

I dont think that I will be able to participate in the first one due to me getting ready to move but if there is a second one, I would really like to join in too!

Sounds like fun! Now that the weather is nice, there's NO GOOD REASON I can't get outside and walk. It's 9/10 of a mile around my block. Do I get to round it off to a full mile if I am pulling a 4-year-old in a wagon? Just kidding! I'll count it accurately

And our neighborhood is a mile if we keep to the curbs, so it looks like 26 days of walking. Did you say it starts on Monday? Is this a race? First one to 26.2 miles or are we going to accumulate and see just how many marathons we can get together? Or both? Or something else? I think I better go check the original post....aha, I see, the first one across gets a prize, the others get cheered on, hurrah! We can all be winners!
I once ran, yes ran, a marathon. I was so determined to finish that I was going to roll across if I had to! Believe me, when you are running next to a bunch of hunky Marines, rolling across is not in order, so at the end there was this surprise spurt of energy, don't know where it came from, and I sprinted across!

Hi everyone,
Looks like the line up so far is
Kelly, Ellen, tutterbear and barbszy. Connie I hope you and your daughter decide to join us!
I may not be on the computer much over the next few days but, we will start on Monday as planned. I'm really looking forward to this. I think it is going to be fun! Good luck everyone.
Ellen...you must tell us more about your marathon and the hunky Marines. Sounds like an interesting story!
Hugs,
Kelly
