Do you have a big supply list to fill for your children for school?

My kids are both attending new schools this year. Their school supply lists are much bigger this year than last year.

Do you have a big supply list this year?

Here's just a few things on my first grader's list:

2 dozen yellow Paper Mate or Ticonderoga brand only

16 or smaller pack crayons

1 pack of thin expo markers

2 boxes of gallon sized Ziploc bags

2 boxes of quart sized Ziploc bags

8 glue sticks

Fisker child sized scissors

letter sized clipboard

2 boxes of tissues

1 container Clorox wipes

2 rolls of paper towels

14 oz bag of M&Ms or Skittles

THEN... a few more items may be added by the teacher at orientation.

I think this list is rather large for a first grader.

How does this compare to other schools?

Here is my son's list for second grade:

- 2 folders #2 pencils (minimum of 3) -eraser -2 red pencils -12 inch ruler -crayons or colored pencils (no markers) -scissors -glue stick -highlighter -one zippper pencil case *Cursive theme tablet ($2.00) *3 cursive copybooks ($1.50 each) *These items wil be sold during the first week of school. The total cost is $6.50.
If possible, please donate two boxes of tissues and two containers of disinfecting wipes.

Here is my daughter's list for eighth grade:

1 5 subject notebook (language arts)
1 2 subject notebook (Math)
1 3 subject notebook (Religion, Social Studies, Spanish)
1 1 subject notebook (Science)
6 2 pocket folders
1 12 inch ruler with inch and centimeter markings
6 - #2 sharpened pencils
3 black or blue pens (no felt tips)
2 red pens
3 highlighters (any color)
Theme paper
1 box of 24 crayons or 1 box of colored pencils
Washable markers
Glue stick
Scissors
1 zippered pouch for all art supplies and 1 pencil case

*Assignment tablet will be purchased by students in school in September.

The following supplies can be brought in during the first two weeks of school.
3 boxes of tissues
3 containers of Clorox wipes
1 roll of paper towels
Hand sanitizer

This is the kind of list I have always been used to. However, my children do not attend public school, so we are accustomed to providing more supplies than the public-school children in town must provide.

When Luke was in kindergarten and first grade, the teachers would buy all the supplies so everyone had the same. It was a flat fee (under $10) per student for all supplies needed to start the year. That was great--no chasing around to get stuff!

Tami, I just noticed that they are brand-specific on the pencils. I have been getting that way myself. "Store brand" pencils are no bargain. They break WAY faster than the Ticonderoga ones, so you wind up using more pencils. This year I am not buying any other brand pencils. IMO, Ticonderogas are well worth the extra cost.

Tami we alsways have a huge list...our school does not supply any school items....so we have to supply all.....including reading bags to fit over the backs of the chairs(we make them from a pillow case) also gum gear and indoor runners.
I don't buy everything new each year I reuse whatever I can from previous years.....I only had to get pens, pencils and excersize books this year. And of course gym gear and runners

I didn't realize that with the pencils. That must be why they are asking for brand specific pencils this year.

Ok, since you've told me that, I will look for those and not buck the system. lol!

I must have donated 15 dozen pencils and eraser caps to my son's 5th grade class last year. I swear that they were eating them!!

There was a big article in our local paper today saying that students don't HAVE to bring all of the supplies on those lists in order to receive an education. I'm guessing that some parents are complaining because of the longs lists this year.

I don't mind donating things to their classrooms because I know that there are some kids who will show up without anything. Also, I don't think that the teachers should have to supply everything with their own money. I do like the idea of collecting money from everyone and handing out the same supplies to everyone--that way there are no hurt feelings - and it's makes it much easier on the parents! ;)

Debbie, it's just the opposite here with book bags. The kids are required to have a backpack that will fit into a locker (or cubby for the little ones) - nothing on wheels--but they are not allowed to bring any type of bag to class with them.

I haven't had to pay for gym clothes yet but there's a chance that I might have to for Andy this year since he is starting middle school. I will find out next week.

What's an exercise book?

My first grader has 23 items on her school list plus I have to pay $40 for school supplies.

Tami, for 2 kids I just paid $88 for gym clothes....that included t-shirt, shorts, sweat shirt and sweat pants. They wear whatever items are weather-appropriate all day to school on gym days.

I went and got all the stuff for my kids today that I didn't already have in the house, taking advantage of sales. If it weren't for the larger notebooks (3- or 5-subject) it wouldn't cost too much at all. Those big notebooks are expensive, and I know they get wasted.

Big DS has 2 morning classes, then lunch, then 2 afternoon classes. So he asks me to buy him 2 5-subject notebooks. He uses one for morning and one for afternoon.

What cracks me up is that kids all the way up to 8th grade need hand sanitizer, tissues, paper towels, lysol wipes. Then they hit high school and need nothing but notebooks, pens and pencils. Hmmm. High school students don't get runny noses?
