Advice with taking the GRE

I am the parent of myself who is not a child, but I need advice anyway. LOL I am taking the practice tests for the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations). Just as rumor has it from my fellow classmates at school it is difficult. I will probably take it in late fall or early winter. If you have taken it, I would appreciate any and all advice that you have to help me boost my grade. Thank!

There's a good chance that it has changed since 1986 when I took it! YIKES! 20 years ago!

But I think the best thing to do is check out one of those test prep books from the library and do a practice run or 2. That's what I've always advised students.

I've got the book, a CD, and a Web site to practice. Everything but the math is overwhelming! I had been told this, but they weren't kidding! LOL I have prided myself on being above average in the English/grammar/vocabulary area. I can not see why everyone panicked when they started practicing. LOL

It might help to get a short workbook on Latin and other roots if you can.

Are you talking about parts of words such as "re" "circum" "de" "stance" "ed" and so on?

That's some of it, DeBora, but a lot of words come from Latin and if you have a handle on the roots it helps a lot. Such as "manu-" (like manual, manufacture) comes from Latin for "hand." When I was in high school we had a class once a week just going over vocab stuff like that. It helped so much!

Someone did mention a class, but most said they couldn't go because it was always during a time when they couldn't go or something like that. I'll have to find out more about the class. However, I do have the book. I figure if I study as much as possible between semesters and when I have time during semesters, I will be okay. I don't know if it means anything or not, but my vacabulary (been called a walking thesauraus) and grammar is above average. But after taking a few practice trials, I feel so stupid. LOL

Those tests are designed that way! Find out if wrong answers count against you or if they only score for correct answers only and ignore any wrong ones.

Does the College Board administer the GRE? They have a great SAT website.

Here's the website for the GRE at Educational Testing Service.

DeBora, note the section on "test takers with disabilities!" There is also a section called "Resources for Test Takers."
