kcqueenm, prednisone is a powerful drug that does a lot of good my mom had to take it for years due to lung damage. Unfortunately it makes you hungry and causes weight gain and sweeling. Just hang in there and keep trying. The moving more is a good thing.
Donna your are doing fantastic. It doesn't matter how long it took you to get started, the important thing is that you did. AND if at first you don't get it quite right keep on trying. Yeah Donna!!! 2 pounds is a great start.
Amanda, the less you have to loss the harder it is...doesn't seem fair. Walking will help in alot of areas of good health though. Good luck!

I had to take prednisone in 2001 when I got a rare blood disease. I had Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and had to take the steriods for several months. Then a couple of years later, I broke my back doing crafts (twice, both my feet, just from walking, and my tibia (leg) just walking into the doctor's office. My doctor realized that the anti-seizure meds that I was taking as well as the prednisone that I took back in 2001 made my bones weak. So, I take that once a month bone stuff, vitamins, and a different drug for seizures. I haven't had a broken bone since. So, if you do have any problems with the bones, but sure to ask your doctor about strengthening them. He also said there could be other side-effects from long term prednazone use. But, in my opinion, the worse is the weight gain. I used to be able to eat anything that I want without gaining weight. Now I still eat alot, but I have to watch what I eat. DH brought me fresh tomatoes and cantalope from his garden. I can eat all I want of those.

Did you get depressed while on the prednisone? They are doing a complete bone scan on me next week. I take calcium supplements 3x a day, I'm trying hard to protect my bones. Did you eventually stop gaining weight? and when you got off of the pridnison did you weight drop? Thanks so much for sharing with me.

I don't remember being depressed. Although, I do know that it can be a side-effect. I had been very ill for 8 months and was new to NM. The doctor I was seeing kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me. I started feeling like a hypochondriac. So, waking up after being unconscious for 8 days made me actually feel better because I knew then it wasn't all in my head. I also had no kidney or pancreous funtion so I was on insulin treatment as well as dialysis.

I did lose the weight after going off the prednisone. However, it seemed like it took me forever to feel normal and healthy again. I had TTP back in August/September of 2001 (was unconscious during the 9-11 attacks) and was healthy enough to start college in August of 2002. I now can over compete with any 20 year old. I hope that helps put your mind at ease knowing you can recover from the prednisone treatments.

Have you thought about talking to your doctor about the depression? I bet there is something they can do to counteract some of the side-effects such as that. Good luck and keep us posted as to how things are going. I will truthfully tell you that I hated the prednisone and how bloated and fat that it made me. But, I am glad that it was only temporary.

Margaret, I know there are other things you can do to offset depression, like exercise. It might not hurt to at least ask him what he thinks you should do about this particular side-effect, if anything. Good luck though. I know it must be tough.
