Anybody else trying to eat healthier?

I thought there would be more activity here at this time of year and was hoping to find some others who are trying to eat healthier.

apricot - I know that Lifestar has made it her 2005 resolution to eat healthier. Since DH is a diabetic, we usually eat pretty healthy so my resolution has been to exercise more.

You can find Lifestar's thread on "New Year Diet Resolutions" here:

Thanks Abear. I have done fairly well in exercising this month so far but also want to eat healthier. My DH was raised on junk food and buys his own chips and sodas if I don't. The soda I can pass on but do occasionally have some chips that I wouldn't if they weren't in the house. Anyway, thanks again for the link.

I need to give up ice cream! I have some every day after dinner. I've tried to shake it up I just love my sweet treat! Any kind, any flavor, there is no ice cream I don't love!

Instead of trying to give it up cold turkey, why not gradually start cutting back on the amount you eat every night?

Eating Healthier

I have always tried to eat healthy since my Dh is also a Diabetic. I have subscribed to Prevention magazine most of my married life which contributes to learning what is good for you. I try not to eat any processed foods if I can help it. Also eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetable. Today I made a big pot of fresh cranberry juice which I will strain and drink all week. The fiber will be added to apple crisp. Drinking plenty of water and fluids keeps you healthy. Health is wealth so they say.

I'm trying.
The fat genes are all over my family. I was a whopping 116 # in high school. Life has put just a "few" back on me - ok more than a few...
Diabetes is all in my family also. Dh's dad has tons of just diagnosed health problems (most self inflicted). All that being said , has made me realize that if I don't shape up around here my body will be in bad shape sooner rather than later.

Basically if the bad things aren't in the house, I don't miss them. I do drink lots of water, don't add salt or sugar to things I cook and am trying to phase out white flour.

That homemade cranberry juice sounds good. I'm not a coffee drinker but used to drink a lot of orange in the morinng, so have cut back on that and started drinking water earlier. The only problem is that now I have to run to the bathroom a lot more often.

I need to have a few sweet snacks in the house or will binge when I'm at work where they sell chocolate candy bars, etc. I do check the portion size on the packages and try to stick to them.

The produce in the stores has been terrible this winter. I did go to Costco today and found some apples and tangerines so I will be eating a lot more fruit for snacks this coming week. I also bought some avocados and frozen vegetables. I usually use the avocado as the main protein portion of a lunch since they are the good type of cholesterol and fat. In fact, one whole one would be enough to fill me up for a whole meal.

White flour is tough to give up. I don't eat much processed food since most of it has way too much sodium in it but have a weakness for gingerbread cookies, even when it is not Christmas time.

Yeah!!! I'm glad I saw this tread. A few months ago, I switched my family to mostly whole grain products. I now refuse to buy bread that is not whole grain. If they are given a choice, the little ones willl make the wrong choice. I also switched to whole wheat ritz, Walmarts triscut cracker (Double Cross) & a multi grain saltine. For chips I can't remember what they are called, but they are multigrain, oh, Sunchips I think. I do give in & get cheese puffs for dh &dh sometimes. Also whole grain pasta noodle. My complaint is that these cost 2, 3 or more times what I used to buy, but good health is worth it. Also I try to keep several choices of whole grain cereal & do have a unhealthy choice around too.
Does anyone know what kind of rice is healthier than white rice?
I am part way through watching SUPERSIZE ME! This is a good movie (documentary) & I hope to force everyone I know to watch it. I would like to find the family version as this version does have foul language, etc. I would suggets y'all try to watch it too, once a month.
