Gather Acorns To Grow A Tree

Growing oak trees from acorns is not only free, it is a great way to teach the kids how important trees survive drought.
Gather your acorns on an autumn family outing, which makes it as much fun as an Easter egg hunt. Seek only the largest, most perfect acorns. You will see the acorn of each species is slightly different in size and shape. Check your acorns each week for longitudinal cracks that tell you the seed inside is beginning to grow and ready to plant. Do not save the ones that don't crack.

The western oak seedling begins life in a unique way. They germinate with an aggressive tap root that exits through the cracked shell and grows immediately downward at a rapid pace. This is true of oaks in the arid states with long dry seasons in summer and fall. The tap root can be 2 feet deep by the time midsummer arrives. It supports a six inch stem with a few leaves the first year. It is these perfect nuts that are the best way to grow native oak trees in your yard.

I can't remember where I remember reading about it, but I came across an excellent article on how to plant acorns, and to my surprise, there was a few prerequisites that one needs to abide by before planting.

Soaking, was one of them (if I remember correctly).

Will have to search for the article again and post it!

Here is a good site that tells all about growing acorns.
Guess soaking them separates the good ones from the bad
with holes before planting.

Thank you, Sueanne!

When it comes to gardening (all things gardening) I love learning whatever I can! Even if one doesn't put it to use themselves (knowledge), it's always nice to be able to guide someone else in the right direction.
