You On a Diet / dr oz / seen on oprah
I was considering starting this diet with a friend. I am not sure how much of a diet it is , but I was wondering if anyone has tried it. I think it is more lifestyle changing oriented, instead of dieting. I think that would be better for me, because I know I have tried almost everything.

If anyone is interested, I think this would be a good place to have a diet support group on this book. Chime in if you are interested! We all could use support. :gabtab:

Thanks ,

megrayau 11-08-2006 03:23 AM

I haven't seen this one. But I will keep an eye on the conversation.

rachela30 11-08-2006 04:52 AM

I think it is going to be a good one. I still have the episode from Oprah on Tivo. I am going to tape it, and once Chris and I watch it together, I can send it out and you all could pass it along to anyone who would like to view it. Rachel

rachela30 11-08-2006 07:14 AM

Chris and I have ordered our books, but I am not sure when they will arrive. So, until then, I am not sure how much posting is going on about the diet. I may watch the Oprah episode again and give you the Reader's Digest version so we all know what it is about. I am excited though, and so are my fat cells... actually, they are shaking! I am not sure if that is because they are scared or if they just wiggle and jiggle! hehe...

LaurieS 11-08-2006 07:47 AM

I watched the Oprah show and was impressed.

It is a life style change to treat yourself better.

And as Women we always put ourselves last and we should be putting ourselves closer to first so we are able to have a healthier and happier life.

I did buy the book but haven't had an opportunity to look at it yet.

chris73 11-08-2006 07:50 AM

Great Thread Rachel.. I can not wait to get the Book and get started.. I need to loose weight and start living better...
Hope someone has done this already and can give us some insight and pointers...
The Oprah Show was awesome.. It gave you the BAD things to watch out for and the Foods that you should eat that keep you full longer... It's not a diet but it is :) 1 Lady that did it went down from a 14 to a 8 in 4 months. Now that would be neat to go from a 10 to a 6 or 7 in 4 months... Hope it works for us too but we need to hit the Gym again!

mindybean 11-08-2006 11:49 AM

I think I just found a good book to buy to use my latest 15% discount from Barnes & Noble. My mom saw the Oprah show and she was at my house when there was a show about the diet on the Discovery Health channel. I recorded it on my DVR, but I haven't watched the whole thing yet. I'll have to try to watch it today and get out to buy the book soon. I need to get things under control soon or I'm going to be in big trouble. I need to either get outside and walk or go down to the basement and get my butt on the treadmill. Good luck to all who are trying to be healthy! I'll check back soon to see if anyone has read the book and tried the diet.

RobertaD 11-08-2006 12:13 PM

I'd be interested in learning more about this diet/life style plan.

rachela30 11-08-2006 12:51 PM

Mindy & Roberta~
I will be posting in order of the book. You can hang out and listen and or join in -- even if you don't have the book! Any questions, I am happy to answer them.
Also, Mindy, are you talking about this book? Are you ordering You On A Diet? If you are that is great, I can't wait for mine to come in. If not, what book are you talking about?

ajrsmom 11-08-2006 01:59 PM

Can you give me an overview of what this diet/lifestyle is all about?

Is there a website available to check it out? I wonder if I can catch a repeat of the Oprah show.....when did it air?

Thanks for any help!

rachela30 11-08-2006 02:23 PM

It aired this week. I still have it on Tivo. I am going to tape it, I can send it to you to watch! Then someone else can send it on. I am going to watch it in its entirity tonight and I will give you an overview. I am going to be driving myself crazy waiting for my book to arrive! Rachel

rachela30 11-09-2006 07:29 AM

You on a diet! Here is how it works:
This book tells you the hormones and chemicals in the body that tell you if you are hungry or full. Sometimes, certain foods block the hormone that tells you you are full, and therefore, you keep eating. It explains how much of each type of exercise you need, and where it is okay to have fat -- and where it is not.
There are foods, like peanuts, that if you eat a few 10-15 minutes before you eat, your appetite goes down and you won't eat as much. Especially if you are famished, and are running around trying to get dinner ready because you are so hungry. IF you eat a handfull of peanuts, and take your time, you most likely will not overeat. I tried this this morning. I think it worked great. I was hungry before I left to pick my van up with my husband, but had no time to eat. I ate some peanuts on the way, by the time we got to the base, my hunger vanished! The only downside I see, is that I have been up for four and a half hours already and I haven't had breakfast yet.
Another part of the diet, is to eat right, you don't want to become Starved or you will overeat later. Just follow the signs of your body, and make sure you give it the right foods so your body gives you the right signals. In the book there are many quick foods that you can have on hand to help with cravings and certain things that go on.
It does address emotional eating and other problems that cause this. It also addresses health problems that come from being overweight, and the problems that can be fixed, and with what.

I hope this information has helped. If anyone wants the tape, they can have it after Chris, and then pass it on to the next person. The Oprah episode aired Thursday, November 2nd.

I know this is very basic, but it is what I got from the Oprah episode. I am still waiting on the book. I am so excited. Rachel

chris73 11-09-2006 07:52 AM

Rachel you are so sweet to tape it and send it to others for them to be able to watch it. It was a really good Show and if there is a repeat you have to catch it or again if you get the tape watch it and then send it on to others.
I can not wait for the Book. We have started watching what we eat and when we shop we read the Incredients. Our shopping takes allot longer but in the end it will be well worth it and Rachel & I had a blast Grocery Shopping yesterday. It is NOT a strict Diet just a change in Lifestyle and the way we eat.

Forgot to say.. Rachel thank you for the Bumper Sticker :)

rachela30 11-09-2006 01:24 PM

Okay, I have news to report already. This really has been an easy day. I haven't had any sugars (like I usually do ) and I am not wanting to snack. I know it is the first day of the diet, but that is usually my hardest day.

Tonight, I am making whole wheat pasta with squash, zuchini, tomatos and basil, in a tiny bit of olive oil. Maybe throw in some mushrooms. Marinated chicken breasts , green beans, and a salad.

That should do it. hehe. Great foods. Hope the kids and the dh love it.

rachela30 11-09-2006 01:25 PM

OOPS ! I forgot to say thanks for the post Chris. I just wanted to let you all know, if you want to see the Oprah episode, PM me your addy and I will send it out as soon as Chris gets done watching it. She missed the last part due to Mommy duties! We all know how that goes. Rachel

RobertaD 11-09-2006 02:00 PM

I found some information on the 'diet' on Oprah's website.

megrayau 11-09-2006 11:22 PM

chris and rachel, are you guys related or do you just live near each other? I think I have read it somewhere but my head is like a sieve at the moment!
I will be interested to see how this lifestyle change works for you.

rachela30 11-10-2006 09:01 PM

Roberta - thanks for finding that information. Hope you join us.

Meg, we are stationed at the same base with our husbands. So far, so good. I really like looking for those ingredients on the labels. It really makes finding food to eat so much easier. I hope you join us. I got the book for 12.49 through an online book club. I just got an email saying it shipped. I am so excited.

rachela30 11-11-2006 05:40 PM

I decided to put the rest of the family on this diet. I am gradually getting rid of food that does not follow this diet. I am going to rid my cabinets, and replace the items with only things that are good for you. It is so much easier that way. I am going to dedicate a cabinet to my husband , for things that he won't give up - you know men - and a snack area for the kids to get things they want for snacks. However, they will be GOOD for you snacks. Things I don't mind them eating. Okay. enough rambling. Just an idea that I had, I am going to start working on it after the gym. Yippee I am excited. Rachel

RobertaD 11-11-2006 06:07 PM

Chips & candy aren't a normal occurance but when they are in the house they get eaten up fast by everyone.

ajrsmom 11-11-2006 07:45 PM

Thanks ladies!

Have you watched the Oprah episode yet? What did you think?

I am still not really understanding the concept of this plan. Maybe the book would help?

chris73 11-11-2006 08:32 PM

OMG I know what you mean about Chips and Candy.. Since Halloween has been here and we have Candy (from what we did not pass out) I have been snacking on them. Breaking my Diet.. I have been really bad today anyways. Just hungry, lol.
Rachel what a great Idea about the Cabinets. I will not buy anymore Candy, Cakes and such either. If it isn't in the House I won't eat it..
I hate to throw out that good Halloween Candy though.. And the German Chocolate... Come to think of it I have Kindereggs coming, lol.. Not a good thing..
Need to hit the Gym again as well.

Tami: I watched most of the Show and was really impressed by what he said. Rachel and I ordered the Book so hopefully we can put some good tips and such on here once we get them :) It sounds like a pretty easy to follow Diet with great Success if you keep it up. You learn the good and bad Incridients. Working out is a Factor as it is in every Diet.
I am eating a Grapefruit as a Snack instead of Candy right now, lol..
Well I am rambeling and should get ready for Bed.. Went out on a Date tonight. 1st 1 in Years, lol...

rachela30 11-12-2006 06:33 PM

Roberta ~ I so know what you mean!

Tami ~ I watched the whole show and it makes sense. You basically watch out for five ingredients and don't buy anything with them. Enriched flour, bleached flour, sugar ( more than 4 grams a serving - I think, this is from memory ) , hydrogenated oils, I can't remember the last one, but I will post it when I get the book. I am gradually using and replacing existing things in my cabinets, I don't want to waste money and I want to do this slow, so the family doesn't notice a big shift. But it is working so far, I snuck in some whole wheat pasta and they liked it. Cool,. huh? That is all I have for now, but I will post more later. Thanks for being interested. I will get more into this when the book arrives. The Literary Guild book club seems to be slow on its shipping. haha. Rachel

jmz2005 11-13-2006 04:05 AM

Thank You for posting the site and all the info you all have provided. I had to forward to my sis, now we can work on it together, lol (a little bit of support for us). We both need to work on losing some weight.

Caronamy 11-13-2006 05:37 AM

There is also a program on Discovery Health on this. Same thing called you on a diet. I taped it too. I like the Oprah show one, but this was a little more detailed. It all makes sense to me. Everyone needs to get a pedometer (sp)

Check out Discovery Health and see if they are running it anytime soon.

Greg really liked the program and wants to do it with me. Speaking of which...Greg started a new job at a local grocery store Friday, and today is his second day. Today he goes in for 4 pm. So he'll have to eat early or eat late. This will be different for him.

Speaking of Greg...he entered a picture into an online photo contest... determined by votes by anyone! He called it Lake Ontario Sunset.

If anyone would like to vote daily (ends Nov 30) he would appreciate the votes! The only thing is you have to register to vote. Which is no big deal; I used one of my emails I use for junk and freebies, and I only entered my name, email and state and it accepted it.

You can vote once a day and for as many photos as you like.

I also vote daily for the "scarf" and "just too big pictures" (not ours, but I like them).

Sooooooo... here is the link... thanks in advance. Greg & Caron

rachela30 11-13-2006 07:13 AM

Jmz ~ So glad you and your sis can join us. I am still waiting for my so impatiently!

Caron ~ I can't wait to get completely started. So glad you could join us. I voted for Lake Ontario Sunset. That is really a beautiful picture! Your votes are up to 104.

rachela30 11-14-2006 01:50 PM

Chris, Still waiting on the books. I hope we get them soon! I am going crazy waiting!!!!

rachela30 11-15-2006 06:06 PM

Okay all the mail has come, the UPS truck, Fedex, and still NO BOOK!!!! Okay, I know it takes time, but I am so excited I cannot sit still for this book. I really really hope it comes tomorrow. Chris.. you about ready to start when this comes in? I will post as we go through the book, so if someone doesn't have it, we can give you the basics! Rachel

rachela30 11-16-2006 03:50 PM

Guess What??? I got my books today! I am getting started to night. They look easy to read. Rachel

chris73 11-20-2006 05:42 AM

I like the Book from what I have seen... I have yet to sit down and read it though :(
Will be starting today.. Can not wait to really do this...
Anyone else order it and recieved it yet?

rachela30 11-20-2006 06:59 AM

Yes, I have mine. I am going to start reading after I get my house cleaned up today. When are you going to start? R

martiehawk 11-23-2006 10:19 AM

I watched both the Oprah and Discovery Health shows and kept checking the DH website which is the one they mentioned over and over. It was so disappointing over there. Then by chance, I found what I was looking for about this plan - on!! They have lots of information and message boards, etc. all about following this plan and some of the people are reporting GREAT results and others not so great yet. It will depend on how much you need to lose and how well you work the plan I think - just like any other plan.

I've only followed it half way the last 2 weeks - working on getting the bad stuff out of the house, knowing Thanksgiving was THIS week, etc. and I've only walked 20 minutes maybe 3 days each week. Yet I lost 1.25 pounds each week. I was impressed. I plan to jump in with both feet this next week and I hope to find the book soon. Lots of places have been sold out.

Hope you all are having a wonderfully :happ2: Day!!

chris73 11-23-2006 11:35 AM

Rachel ordered the Book on a Bookclub she joined thru MyPoints. She ordered mine as well. It is very interesting. You might want to try it thru Literature Guild or something like that.. It was under $15.00
I have so far cleared out some things in the House. I do watch more of what I eat and such. When I snack now I snack on Nuts instead of Candy.. Still a bad downfall of mine.
Good Luck to all... and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

martiehawk 11-23-2006 06:22 PM

Thanks for the idea of ordering through a book club. I know I'm still a member of one somewhere. LOL! I was trying to wait for our library to get it but I may have to buy it and donate it myself for that to happen. I tried to put one on hold in our system but they won't let you until it's been in the system 6 months.

I've done the same as you mentioned - switched to a handful of nuts as my snacks and I think that has helped a lot. Today I had my traditional Thanksgiving dinner and I did over do a bit but then when it was time for supper I only had 1/2 a turkey sandwhich. Normally it would have been a lot more.

Well, hope you had a blessed day!

rachela30 11-26-2006 09:53 PM

Hi Martie! Sorry I have been gone for so long. I have been on holiday with family. No, we did not go anywhere but down the street, but we were gone all day for a few days.
I am so glad you could join us. I am going to start reading the book tomorrow and posting little tidbits of information I think might be useful to us. When you get the book, let me know what you think. Can't wait to get the chocolate out of the cupboard and the good grains in there instead. Boy, it is going to be hard during Christmas. I am going to bake for the doggies, and decorate little gourmet doggie cookies with the kids instead of sugar cookies. I hope that helps! hehe. Welcome welcome , Rachel

rachela30 12-04-2006 08:18 AM

Hello all! I hope everyone is doing a good job on this diet. I am just now starting to read the book. I got caught up in day to day life and had to put it on the back burner, but I am charged up again and ready to get started. This is NOT a book that is going to make you feel guilty for indulging in some holiday cheer, but rather a book that says, okay, you ate pumpkin pie yesterday, lets eat a little healthier today.

I have read the first chapter and what I have taken away from it ( since it is an overview ) is that this book is going to teach you how to eat so the chemicals and hormones in your body react differently than they have been in the past. For example, did you know that fiber keeps you fuller longer, and that sugar actually makes you THINK you are hungry when you are not? I did not know that.

Did you know that most of our prepackaged foods are full of sugar and that may be why we are led to snack, even though we just ate. You are NOT hungry, BUT sugar tricks your mind into thinking you are. How wierd.

But, there is great news!!! DID YOU KNOW, that just like sugar tricks your brain into thinking you are hungry, there are foods that make your brain think you are full?

There are a list of these types of foods, mostly ( I think - I have not gotten to that section yet ) whole grains, peanuts, and fiber rich foods. I am going to give more information as I go through the book. There are little tests you go through to figure things out about yourself, how you eat, things like that.

I am really enjoying the book though. And if there is anyone out there who is reading the book too, feel free to post things you think, experience or -- if you see something I have posted that is incorrect - -PLEASE, correct me!! I will not be offended. I need to do this right, and sometimes I am in too much of a hurry or too excited about something to get my thoughts out in a clear, precise manner...hehe. No Proofreading for me... I am impatient.

Hope this helps and hope you can join on us on our quest!

RobertaD 12-05-2006 04:47 AM

I know they are now saying that diet pop is treated the same way in your body making you think you are hungry, etc.

My big temptation is pop I normally limit myself to 1 can a day but that keeps me dependent on the sugar.

Forced myself to drink 4 cups of water yesterday and I'm on my 2nd cup now for today.

martiehawk 12-05-2006 06:30 AM

I know that I became more aware of how much sugar and especially HFCS was in EVERYTHING when I had a friend whose daughter was diagnosed allergic to corn. She can have NOTHING with HFCS and was always asking me if I could believe that such and such had it and WHY would they put it in something like Lipton Onion Soup Mix. LOL! It did make me much more aware though.

I haven't been able to get the book or get my hands on a copy yet. I'm hoping sometime this week or next it will work out for me to read it. I've been reading YOU: The Owner's Manual though and it's got a lot of great information.

I will tell you that it took me quite a while to make the switch to drinking more water and I started with some of the flavored waters but, in the end, I prefer plain water and I even find myself craving it. I've learned that so many times when I "thought" I was hungry I was actually thirsty and becoming dehydrated. Now I try to grab a cup of water to drink first and see if that satisfies before I eat something.

Yesterday for lunch I had the mixed greens salad with walnuts and some feta cheese and made the balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. It was REALLY good. I just didn't have the dried cranberries to put in the salad. It would have added a sweet element and made it even better I'm sure.

If any of you haven't done so yet, check out and you can print out the menus, recipes and grocery lists from there. It's an awesome website for helping you follow the plan.

Well, I need to run but I hope you all have a wonderful and successful day and week!

rachela30 12-05-2006 03:53 PM

Thanks for that information Martie! I went to that site and found a lot of interesting things. I am still reading. Working on the next chapter now. Still trying to cut out the sugars, but getting closer to having my kitchen cabinets transformed from unhealthy stock to healthy stock. Yea!

Roberta, that is so funny you mention that about diet soda. I usually use them as an appetite depressant, but to do that you have to drink and drink and drink... and that cannot be good for you. I am going to cut them out as much as possible. Thanks for reminding me!

Hope everyone is doing their best on this diet.

mindybean 12-05-2006 06:22 PM

Have any of you done the Real Age test at For me it was scary! I was 8.3 years older than my actual age. I'm overweight, I smoke, I don't eat enough fruits/veggies, not enough exercise, the list goes on and on!!!

I didn't buy the book (You on a Diet) in early Nov. w/ my 15% off coupon from Barnes & Noble, but then I got a 40% off coupon from there later so I bought the book with that! What a deal! I read the book and really liked what it said. I haven't faithfully started following the program yet, but I have made a few small changes. Every little bit helps! I didn't throw away all the food in my pantry w/ "bad" ingredients, I just can't bring myself to throw away food that I paid good money for.

A few other tidbits that I got out of the book and I can't remember if they've been posted or not...

-Stop eating 3 hrs before bedtime (this is a hard one for me!)
-walk 30 minutes every day - no exceptions!
-20 minutes of strength training at least twice a week
-coffee is a good appetite suppresant and has antioxidants
-eat 3 meals (don't measure, just eat until your satisfied) and 2 snacks each day
-for at least one meal every day eat the same thing - have the same breakfast every morning or the same lunch every day - or better yet, the same breakfast (oatmeal) & lunch (healthy salad) every day and just have something different for dinner each night. The more choices you have the more you over-indulge. The fewer choices, the less you think about food.

If I think of any other helpful tips from the book I'll post them.

Oh, have you all measured your waist? They say the number on the scale doesn't matter, it's the number on the tape measure. Women should be 32.5" or less and men should be 35" or less. I'm WAY above 32.5", I don't know if my waist has ever been that small! I carry most of my weight in my waist and that's were it can cause the most problems - diabetes, heart problems, etc. and I have grandparents with those issues so they're in my genes.

I'm hoping to do a little better every day. I want to be healthier, feel better, live longer, and set a good example for my girls.

Good luck everyone!
