photograph groupings

Do you display your family photographs on top of a shelf or entertainment center or do you have yours in a wall grouping?

Ours are on top of the entertainment center but it is starting to look messy...or I am getting bored with the look.
I am thinking of making a wall collage. For those of you who have done this did you go out and buy all the same frames so they match or are they mixmatch?

peace,train

Our family photographs are spread through out the house with both wall hangings, and mantel / shelf / entertainment settings. My all time favorites are two framed collage of pictures hanging on our walls.

We also have both ,pictures hanging on the wall, and on a tall bookcase. The ones on our bookcase are all of our grandchildren. A few years ago I made three very large collages, one of our ancestors and then ranging down to the newest members, and one of our children when they were young, and one of all of the sports that our family has ever been involved with, ei. hockey & figure skating pictures, baseball teams etc. My hubby made frames for them all and we fronted them with glass. I think they look super. We also love our animal family, so we have dog pictures here & there as well. Just all looks homey, probably wouldn't make it in a homestyle magazine LOL.

I have several grouping of family pictures on my walls, the kid's photos on the entertaiment center, and misc. photos throughout the house. The 8x10 photos of the kids on the entertaiment center have matching frames. Only one of the kid's photos is not a graduation picture ( and that will change this summer). I am considering changing them to a wall grouping also.
The ones that are hanging do not all have matching frames. The one group that is our family pictures through the years have similar frames (all wood in same tones) Another grouping has a large antique, oval photo with curved glass as the centerpiece. The other photos diplayed with it are in cheap discount store frames that looked good with the main frame.
It is pretty much a matter of taste on how you frame your photos. If you do decide to put them on the wall --play with the arrangement of your grouping on the floor first. If you can find a piece of paper that fits the area you are going to hang the photos, put the paper on the floor first. Arrange your pictures the way you like them, making sure they are level. Draw around all the frames with a pen or pencil. Mark the position of hangers on the back of the frames if you can. Then all you need to do is pick the paper up and tape it to the wall. You can pound your nails for hanging the pictures right through the paper, remove the paper and hang the pictures.

I have groupings on all walls in the living room-with my great grandfather in the middle and my parents at the top, my family growing up is on one wall, my middle dd and her family are over one window, my youngest dd and her family are over the other window and my oldest dd and her family are on the wall over the video shelves. We have pictures throughout the house also, on just about every surface. dd#1 had a picture of her dd#1 blown up to poster size and it's hanging in the hall way, along with other pictures.
We have some groups with matching frames, some with whatever frames were handy and I always look for unique frames for family, friends and grandchildren.
