I also had horrible back problems due to a herniated disk and would awake barely able to move or walk. I had a firm mattress which had been given to me and never considered replacing it. My cats took that choice away from me by misbehaving while I was out of town and the person trusted to care for them did not take care of them. I had to throw my bed away. I did a lot of comparison shopping and ended up getting a Serta (the ones with the counting sheep) pillowtop. It was actually very expensive and I almost didn't buy it! It was priced at $899 but was on sale for $200 off. It is the pillowtop, nonflipper, and is unbelievably comfortable. I actually wake now without the horrible pain and stiffness!!! It is well worth the price (even though I almost had cardiac arrest for a week after I bought it due to spending that much money!)

just wanted to add a bit of info that may help--if you live near a Costco or Sam's club thier mattress prices are unparalleled...my sister turned me on to them when she tried multiple mattress stores; she lives in NYC and and the convienience of having a mattress delivered and set up would be worth having to spend a few extra bucks, but when she went to Sam's, she decided to rent a U-Haul and deal with it herself -- you do have to get it home yourself and if there's any problem you would have to get it back to the store but they do have an excellent return policy...

the long and short of it is, I went to Sam's and bought a Sealy pillowtop King size for $500.00 -- mattress and box springs -- well worth the price of the U-Haul and any possible return problems --
so far no problems (1yr) and my husband is thrilled with the deal
(he said that at that price it would even be worth the price of membership if we had to join -- still hundreds less than the price of lesser quality mattresses in the stores that we checked)

hope this helps

P.S.: I was turned on to this tidbit years ago so I always assume everyone knows the mattress manufacturers dirty little secret--if you know this already, i apologize for wasting your time-- one think to keep in mind is that the mattress makers sell the same mattresses to different retailers under different names so that it is difficult for consumers to comparrison shop: a posturepeidic may be a posture supreme may be a deluxe comfort support -- all the same mattress just different retailers...don't let them fool you with a fancier name;-)

We bought a king-sized waterbed fifteen years ago. I still love it and would never sleep in anything else. (Besides, we don't a spare $1000 to get a new mattress every 10 years.) The waterbed just doesn't wear out.

We have a waterbed too and I love my 80% motionless mattress. It's warm in the winter, cool in the summer, firm enough for my bad back (had it LONG before I had the bed) and I love it. Sleeping in other beds makes my back hurt, hips hurt, arms and legs numb and I swell like a toad.
We did buy a mismatched, full size set for a spare bedroom recently at our local furniture store. I paid $200 for it, has a Serta, no flip, pillow top mattress and is VERY comfortable. Everyone who sleeps on it raves about how great it is.

I used to have these symptoms every night. I had others as well, such as sinus problems, and anxiety for no known reason. I did not change my mattress, I changed my diet! It sounds weird at first, but check out a book called The Yeast Connection. I can almost guarantee that if you follow his recommendations for two months, you can kiss your backaches goodbye! Once in a while, I go off the program really big, and my backache returns, so I know this program is effective.

Hope this helps!

the yeast connection

Sounds interesting, Kellie, could you tell us a little more about this diet plan?

I have the same problem with mattresses. I wake up aching and sore. The only one I ever slept on that did not do this to me is an Englander. Somewhat pricey but worth it.

We need a new mattress too and I'm curious about the Tempur-Pedic . It's a type of foam that is recomended for people with fibromyalgia, fibrositus, sciatica, aching hip and knee joints and othersleep problems. At our Mall, in the Brookstones store, I had a chance to try it out. It's really different than anything else. Has anyone bought one and how do you like it ?
