Well. I am getting closer to making my own soap(using Spacedup's recipe). I found a 6 gallon container at Good Will, brand new..$5.00 with a lid too...looks like a small garbage pail with a bail handles. Now I am still searching for a pot to cook the soap in..none at Good Will this week atleast. Haven't found any at garage sales either. I will keep on looking!

Janet...I have no clue about what you have or do not have in Michigan, but do you have any Flea Markets there? If you do, check them out for a Stock Pot...I picked up one for $4 at the Flea Market here. It was a little black on the bottom, but who cares for $4 it was a steal! And the looks didn't matter for what I wanted it for anyway!
You can pick up good sized stock pots at Wal Mart around the holidays for about $8 if you want a new one.
Good luck and talk to you again.

Losflores, We don't have any flea markets around here...WI is the closest one...a couple of times a year and it invovles more travel.

I have a couple of more junk stores to check out...they call them antique stores but it is mostly junk! lol

Our town has a population about 10,000 people and 6,000 of them are students, so they come and go. We only have 4 stop lights so not much traffic. lol It is a great place to live but shopping stinks! Especially when you are trying to save money.

I'll have to check out Walmart again and see if they have any $8.00 stock pots. Gee who would think the hardest part of making soap was finding a pot!

Laundry Soap

Well, I can't believe it I finally got to make soap, using spaced_up recipe. It was easy and fun to do. I am doing a load of dirty socks and will let you know what I mean..It sure makes alot of soap! I have 4 gallons now and I use a cup for a load, more if the clothes are work clothes.

Has anyone else tried this?

Doing laundry with the new soap and it seems to be working well. I had some really dirty jeans and the dirt came out. So far no one is itching so this might be the answer for us. If you all try this let me know what you think.

Hello Janet and others,

I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to get back to the forum.
I have been sick for weeks. I'm getting better I hope. lol

The water you use for making the soap should not matter. I use tap water here...we are on town water and we have a water softner.

I use an OLD aluminum pan my aunt gave me years ago. It has wored just fine for making my soap. The inside is a little worn from the 20 mule team borax, but it is still in good shape. I'm sure this pan may not last me the rest of my life and I'm ready at that given time to replace it.

Janet, I'm glad yo uhave tried it and hope no allergys come from it.

I will be making another 7 batchs at the end of Oct.. I do this every year as I started in Oct with the first 7 batch. I make a 7 batch every 3 months here. My guys are hard on me with laundry. LOL Only 4 people in my house and that is why I needed a way to have cheap laundry soap.

Have a Great Day,
spacedup in IN..

Hello Spacedup

I made the laundry soap and have been washing with it now. So far so good...no allergies ;-) I thought it would be okay since it was made with Ivory soap...isn't that the puerest form of soap???

I do alot of laundry here too! Everyday and there is only the 3 of us..but there is always something to wash. Like I should wash some throw rugs tomorrow Thanks so much for sharing the recipe!

Now..is there a way to make shower soap? We use liquid soap and we each have our own netted sponge.

Sorry to read you have been sick for so long...hope you are feeling better by now. It seems like everyone I chat with is fighting some type of bug. I was under the weather for awhile myself and this morning I woke up and felt GREAT!!!

Do you have any other tips on saving money or just being thrifty?

janet

After I found how easy it was to make soap, I don't think I will ever buy bottled soap again! My soap is working so well...dirty socks are so clean and no one is itching...we all have sensitive skin and this is it for us! It doesn't take too long to make yet! I love washing clothes now! Just wish I didn't have to use the blasted dryer...electricity is so high here!
