Miniature Styrofoam Hat Magnets

A lady told me how to make these at the craft show I did week before last.

Take a styrofoam cup, turn it upside down in the microwave on a microwave safe plate, turn on microwave just a couple of minutes. The cup will shrink down and looks like a little garden hat. She painted it inside and out with acrylic paints, attached some tiny silk flowers with a glue gun and put a magnet on it. Too cute! She gave me some but there in the bottom of the tub somewhere?

I've have seen these before and they are cute!

Wouldnt this be a cute idea for those in the Red Hat Society?

Even for us Secret Sisters!!

How about for Mother's Day?

Wonder if a pin could be attached somehow to be able to wear it????

Tami

Attaching a pin should be pretty easy I would think... you've come up with some wonderful ideas for it's use.

I just wonder if the pin would stay attached to the styrofoam?

Here is one way of making them:

How to Make Little Styrofoam Hats
Remember Shrinky Dinks? Styrofoam coffee cups can be used the same way to make quaint little hats for decoration, dolls or just an interesting collection.

Steps:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

2. Set two or three Styrofoam coffee cups upside down on a cookie sheet.

3. Use 12-oz. cups for Barbie-sized hats; 6- and 8-oz. cups for pin-on accessories.

4. Leave plenty of space between each cup.

5. Put the cookie sheet in the center of the oven.

6. Keep a close eye on the cups while they shrink.

7. Take them out when they have stopped moving - after about a minute.

8. Decorate the hats with acrylic paints, markers, ribbons, tiny flowers, feathers and so forth.

9. Glue a safety pin or jewelry pin on the back of one cup and wear it proudly.

Tips:
If you're very quick, you can do some additional shaping as the hat comes out of the oven.

Cut the rim off for a different shape.

Decorate the cups with markers, ballpoint pens or gel pens before popping them in the oven. Don't paint them before baking, though.

Warnings:
Watch the cups very carefully while baking. If left in too long, they'll catch fire.

I'm still looking for a good picture to post too.

Cute little hats... sounds like a good project for mom and kids. She said she saw this on some morning show, they were adorable. They didn't seem to sell well but I don't think she had them displayed very well either.

A gum drop tree would be a good display I think.

I made these for party favors, You make cylinder out of stiff pretty paper and put little bag of candy inside and tape to top of cylinder then add hat. I t will stick on without glue. oh wait I remember now it was a cylinder skin colored ,draw a face then wrap pretty paper under here face, add hat. Also saw them in a craft magazine decorating a branch painted white in a decorated coffee can for mothers day!
