Grandma's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are flat-out the best chocolate chip
cookies on Earth. The dough may look a
little dry and hard to work with but well
worth the effort.

Grandma's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup Crisco shortening, solid
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 teaspoon hot water
1 cup chopped nuts
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate bits
2 cups rolled oats
1 tablespoon vanilla

Mix flour, soda, and salt. Cream shortening,
add sugars gradually, creaming until light
and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating
after each addition. Add hot water and
vanilla, then dry ingredients. Add nuts,
chocolate bits and oatmeal. Mix thoroughly
and blend.

Drop by half-teaspoon onto greased cookie
sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for about 8-12
minutes or until top is just golden brown.
Let stand on cookie sheet a few minutes
before removing.

“The value of doing something does not lie in the ease or difficulty, the probability or improbability of its achievement, but in the vision, the plan, the determination and the perseverance, the effort and the struggle which go into the project. Life is enriched by aspiration and effort, rather than by acquisition and accumulation.”
