Do you have an older Singer Featherweight?

Hi Everyone,

I make quilts and do some of the piecing by machine, but the quilting by hand. I have been considering buying an older Singer Featherweight sewing machine. I have heard that the remakes/clones are not very good. Not having used either one, I am wondering if the older ones are worth the money? I have been looking at the prices on eBay and they are rather expensive.

Do you have one? Do you love it as much as the people I have read about? What makes them so wonderful?

Thanks for your help!

P.S. My Kenmore machine is not so hot! I am wanting to replace it.

Happy face

Hi Jenna,

I am not familiar with Singer machines, but I got a kick out of reading that you are wanting to replace your Kenmore. My Kenmore is 30 years old (high school graduation gift) and is still going strong. It is so old, that it actually is called a "Lady Kenmore" (how sexist is that?!!). I'm not planning on replacing it until someone comes up with a combo traditional sewing machine/serger!

I am new to quilting, but I have machine-pieced a lovely quilt and am now planning on quilting it. It might take me forever, but I'm thinking of hand-quilting it -- since I'm nervous about my old "Lady Kenmore" not providing nice-enough results. Does the Singer machine you are interested in do an automatic stippling stitch? Have you ever quilted free-hand on a sewing machine -- or do you always do the quilting part by hand?

Good luck on your Singer search!

We have had Singers in my family for 3 generations. From my own experience- the old Singers were good quality. The new Singers are total garbage. I gave my daughter one for graduation, and it was so bad she lost interest in sewing and we finally just disposed of it. Even I, who was an experienced sewer could not use it. I also bought a brand new one for myself (to replace my old one) which absolutely would not work properly. When I talked to an employee in the Singer store about the problems, she told me (Actually!!) that I needed to buy a new one - and my new one was less than a year old!! Don't waste your money on a Singer!

Quilters like the Featherweights to take back and forth to classes because they are lighter that other portables. They also are a prestige item. I think I paid $200 used for mine lots of years ago but there are lots of prices depending on condition. Check with your local quilt guild or quilt shop. They may know who wants to sell. They are a good little machine but at home I use my Bernina.
