I too heard that about the Maytag Neptune's, I did some research on various websites & found out that this brand "Maytag" is no longer as good as it used to be. The company has certainly changed it customer service & quality of appliances. That steered me away from buying that pair of washer & dryer. I am very happy with the Whirlpool Duet. Sometimes it's soooo quiet I have to go into the laundry room to see if it's still running, even though it does have a bell to alert you it has stopped.

Hmmm...that's too bad about the Maytags. I also had the problem with the mildew smell, but all I did was call Maytag, give them my model & serial numbers and they contacted my nearest dealer who came out and replaced the part at no charge. It was a pretty extensive job, too, as he was here for a couple of hours. The newer models have the drain so that problem doesn't happen.

Thanks for all of the posts!!

We have been debating between the Maytags and either the GE or Fridgedaire models (both rated well with consumer reports). After reading the comments about Maytags, I don't know if I want to spend the money!

I like the Fridgedaire because it heats the water, but I don't like that it has such a small opening (similar to the Ge and Kenmore stackables). Is this really much of a problem? I plan on using cloth diapers at least part of the time with the twins, and don't really like the thought of having to put them through the opening by hand. The one thing I liked about the Maytag compared to all of the others was that it looked like you could 'dump' the laundry in.

Thanks again,
Kelli

We bought the Kenmore Calypso and love it. It is a top loading energy/water efficient machine. Our water bill dropped dramatically as did our gas bill for drying the clothes. Our old washer exploded (almost literally) when our baby was three weeks old. We went out looking for one with the newborn and his 7 year old sister. It was not fun.

Good Luck!

I definitely just dump my laundry in. The opening on the Neptune is very big.

Oops!! Our Calypso is a Whirlpool not a Kenmore. Kenmore has the same machine under a different name (can't remember what it is though). I just stuffed a big load of towels in mine. When it goes in the drier on medium, it will be done in about 40-45 minutes. The washer spins out most of the water.

Washers/Dryers

Regarding the Whirlpool Duet, I can sell you the pair for
$1656 plus tax.
No shipping costs, products are brand new with manufacturers warranty, and you can order online! It's an awesome deal, as these generally retail for $1,000 a piece.
They scored very well in the July 2002 issue of Consumer Reports. Please let me know if you're interested.

Frigidaire

I had a top loader Frigidaire and had nothing but problems with it. Eventually the company offerred to replace it but only with one of their own or subsidiary company's brand. I ended up getting a White Westinghouse but have still had to put money into it. I wonder what happened to washer and dryers that lasted 10-20 years??? It seems nothing lasts more than 5 years nowadays!

We bought a frigidaire gallery front loader 2.5 years ago. I love it! I haven't had any repair problems so far. It uses less soap and I just use half the regular amount of regular tide. My clothes are cleaner. And with 4 young kids, our clothes get REALLY dirty. They come out of the washer with less water in them because of the spin cycle. My dryer usually takes 25 minutes to dry an extra large load. The only thing I haven't been able to wash was a thick king size comforter.

We are planning on getting the Fridgedaire front loaders this weekend. I'm glad to know you haven't had any problems with them!

Have you found the smaller opening an inconvenience? I know that the inside is as large as the Duets, Maytags, etc., I have just been wondering if it's a problem getting lots of laundry in and out.

Thanks!
Kelli
