Diaper Stains...

Those unsightly diaper stains! If it's not the classic pink and purple stains that develop around the elastic leg holes and seat of rubber pants, it's yellow stains on the diapers. You soak, you scrub, you bleach, you wash, and still, diaper stains. What to do?

Back when my kids were babies and in diapers, their diapers looked best from Spring till Fall, because I always line-dried the diapers out back on the clothesline, and natural sunlight works wonders when it comes to bleaching-out stains, including tough stains that can plague cloth diapers.

However, over the course of Winter, my electric tumble dryer was my best friend when it came to drying diapers, and each year (Fall till Spring), I always found the diapers would go from looking fresh, clean, and white, to a pale yellow... even dingy grey in no time at all, particularly where baby wets and soils, and no amount of scrubbing or bleaching got those unsightly stains out.

Though there isn't any single magic bomb that prevents staining in diapers, or gets out the ugly stains that happen, following a proper pre-soak ritual can help eliminate and lesson the level and degree of staining that electric tumble dryer dried diapers can suffer from.

If you wet-pail, add a couple of table spoons of Borax to the diaper pail water. The Borax will start the process of treating any stains, and by the time diaper-wash day rolls around, the diapers will be ready for a hot water and bleach wash.

For those who dry-pail, which is the method I opted for with my last 4 kids, dump diaper pail into washing machine and run a quick spin-cycle to flush diapers of any leftover urine/wetness. Next, select a standard fill-cycle, and add in a half a cup of bleach to the wash water. Allow diapers to soak for 30 minutes, then dial-in a hot water wash cycle, add detergent, close lid, and walk away.

When the last fill cycle occurs, add in 250 mL of standard household vinegar to the washing machine, and allow the diapers to finish their wash cycle.

When drying diapers in a tumble dryer, use care to not over-dry, as over-drying can toughen and harden the fibres in the diapers leaving them stiff and uncomfortable for baby, not to mention over-drying can result in yellowing, so always remove the diapers while still slightly damp and hang-dry for the remainder.

Additionally, I always found when I used diaper liners, staining was greatly reduced, so investing in a roll or box of economical disposable (flushable) diaper liners, is another great way to help prevent those unsightly diaper stains in your home!
