DIL Wants a Family Cookbook for Christmas

(as posted by kellydid in the August What's for Dinner? thread)

Need some advice. My dear new DIL wants a cookbook for Christmas of all the old family recipes. Now, don't misunderstand me, but this is already Aug. and I am addicted to FC, (we have to keep that in mind always), I don't know if I can get it ready for her by Christmas. That's alot of recipes!!!!!

Any suggestions or ideas. I know to use the computer, but heavens, that is all I would be doing.

HELP ME!!!!

Kelly,
Just do ONE recipe a day and by Christmas you'll have a book full!

I recommend the Mastercook recipe software. It's easy to format recipes you have in other sources and import them into Mastercook, and then you can set it up to print out a really nice looking cookbook. There are choices of recipe format.

At least your DIL gave you 4 months notice!

Can't I just type them in and print them out? I am soooooooo

I think that would be the best way for you to do it. Then punch holes in them and put them in a three ring binder that you have personalized/decorated for her.

Sure you can type them in and print them out....use Microsoft Word or Word Pad or whatever your computer has. If you use cookbook software it will organize them into categories for you, make a table of contents and everything. It all depends on how complicated you want to get with it!

Oh Thank You

Oh thank you. Not confused so much anymore!!

Here was my idea: Type and print them out. Section them off. Put them in a photo album. Cover the photo album. And present it to her that way.

I can print it out like recipe cards on the computer. So I can probably put two to a page back and front. That way they would be protected. I was going to try to figure out some way to divide them up into catagories. I haven't come up with an idea for that yet.

What do ya think, girls?

I would suggest getting a nice binder and a box of page protectors.
You can put the recipes back to back in the page protectors. This way if she spills on the book (and if she USES it, it WILL get spilled on!) it's easy to keep clean.

Just make sections that make sense to you....like
breakfast
poultry
fish
soups
desserts
cookies

Whatever categories you have....

You guys gave me a great Christmas (and frugal) gift idea I am going to compile (with the kids help) a bunch of our family's favorite recipies and make a mini cookbook. I mean with both sides of the our family it should be interesting! I think the kids just might come to cherish it too in the future and Dayne loves to cook.
I just need ink , TIME and pc paper! Maybe scan a few pics?
You guys are great!

I've found a great program through Better Homes and Gardens online. Go to:

http://www.bhg.com/bhg/mycookbook/

I've created a cookbook for my mother using all of her favorites, and I've also got an ongoing cookbook for myself that I update every time I find a new recipe. The program creates an Adobe PDF file which can be printed from home, or you can actually order a hardcopy spiral-bound version through the site for a fee.

I like that it lays everything out for you and allows easy categorization of the recipes. It also allows you to upload a personal photo to use on the cover sheet.

It's worth a try - it's definately worked for me and my family!

Good luck to you!

How about photocopying the ACTUAL recipes as you have them written? This way, your DIL would get recipe notes etc. that you have marked in and any changes made. It would not be near as labor intensive. You could put the photocopied pages in a binder in page protectors......even to have recipes by grandmothers and other family members etc. in their own handwriting would be someday a treasure!
