Not sure how fancy you want it to be but you could use a lg plastic container, such as a big Cool Whip container, for the hat and then cut a large circle out of foam core or cardboard for the bottom of the hat - and you can easily cut a circle out to the bottom of either of those materials. Cover both with felt using spray adhesive and hot glue. I say plastic container because it would be lightweight. You could also cut a hole in the "top" of the hat so that you could stick it on the top branch of the tree.

Another idea would be to use poster board cut to size of the hat and cover with felt. It would be a little sturdier than just using felt by itself.

I would love to see pics of your tree once it's finished!

you could also use stiff felt. I know that joann Fabric and Crafts sells it.

Do you have an old 3 pound coffee can somewhere? Spray paint it black, make a black cardboard brim. Glue on a couple of holly leaves with beries. The problem is you'll have to ask around for a can since coffee comes in plastic now.

Ajrsmom: I want to make it as a tree topper for a snowman themed xmas tree
Coll: I'll have to see if I can find stiff felt....sounds like that might be best
Joyce that might work...now where can I get a can that big...

I knew FC would be the best place to find the answer...

If you can't find the stiff felt, black poster board would probably work.

Ask on FreeCycle or Craig's List for a coffee can.

For a tree topper you could use a glass jar or a plastic jar like a mayonnaise jar if that size will work for you.. Then a piece of arcylic cut into the circle for the bottom of the hat; glue this to the jar opening; be sure you also have a circle cut into the arcylic so that the "hat" will sit down over your top branch. Then spray paint it all black and add whatever decorations you want to the hat, and it should last for years! Would love to see a picture of what you do!

Kroger coffee still comes in metal cans so check your grocery store then ask family & friends if they have any empty ones. I saved up 6 cans for the girl scouts to melt wax & crayons for the candle dipping event.

If you use a plastic container I was thinking having the lid on it would allow more control on placing it on the tree by cutting a hole through the cardboard bottom & lid and sliding it on the tree.
