The Dinner party went off well despite a few gliches. My son had invited 8 of his friends; 4 boys & 4 girls. 2 of the boys at a 1/2 hour after it was suppose to start still hadn't arrived. Ugh! So my husband & younger son jumped in to the part. (By running late, it did make the chicken cordon bleu a bit dry but still yummy, when it came time to serve.) The only problem with that was I lost my kitchen help! However having my husband in on it, helped the kids get started with dialogue. They were all so afraid to step out of their comfort zone at first - fear of making a fool out of themselves. One of the boys that hadn't showed came about 1/4 way in. He took back over his part, giving me back my son to help me in the kitchen.
I had prepared quite well in advance for the kitchen part that for the most part everything was a perfect success as far as food goes. The kids started getting into it when they discovered the "murdered" body with crime scene tape around the victim.
At the end I had the kids vote on best dressed for their part, best actor/actress, and most clueless, as well as who they thought was the murderer. I quickly printed off on my labelmaker the person w/the most votes & what the award was for. So I had an awards ceremony, giving the trophy as well as certificates signed by my son, the detective. I built up suspense and had the real murderer please stand. I then gave him handcuffs and awarded those that had guessed it was him (2 of them) with inspector badges. I took a group possed photo and matted it with a matte that I'd had all of them sign w/their name and their characters name in " ". Then I copied it for each of them and sent it to school with my son the next school day. They had a great time, looked perfect, and lots of laughs!
If anyone is thinking of hosting such a party emphasize to the extreme that they be on time it makes for added stress and if I didn't have stand ins available it could have potentially ruined all my hard work!

It sound like you had a great time overall!! That's one of the best BD parties that I've ever heard of. Great going Mom!! I bet that the kids are saying that you are soooo cool!!

You are very lucky that only 2 kids showed up late. At least they showed up after saying that they were going to come to the party....that's more than I can say for my dd's party last yr.

It was alot of fun! To see the kids dressed "in character" was great too! Unfortunately they talked about it so much at school that some of my son's other friends that I know would not have partook in such an event are mad at him for not inviting them. I told him to blame it on me so he would get off the hook. Something like my mom made up the list based on who she thought would "act" according.

Can't please everyone, although I do like to try too. I don't like hurting feelings.
