Cold Sores

HELP!!!

My son is always getting cold sores. Yesterday another one popped up.

Can you give me any suggestions for getting rid of them. They seem to get so big and it takes forever to get rid of them.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I get cold sores and when I feel one coming on, I take L-Lysine and it helps to get rid of them a lot faster.

I know that there is a medicine out now that is supposed to help but I think that its a prescription formula.

As with everything for kids, please get the doctors approval beforehand.

Petro-Carbo salve is worth a try.

I have been told by my physician that most cold sores are of the herpes simplex variety. This is the same virus which causes chicken pox. When I feel a cold sore coming on, I hold a piece of ice on the area, off & on, for about 5 minutes. Sometimes this helps, other times, not!

I haven't personally used but heard the OTC Abeva is good. The trick is to catch it early. How old is he? does he feel them coming on? If he can then the L-lysine(?) will help too. Untravilet light also can trigger then so if he can wear a sun screen esp on his lip area that might help.

I used to get them on my nose of all places. Dr thinks that someone with one on there mouth kissed me on my nose and passed it that way. Stress or about to be getting sick seem to trigger them for me. (knock wood) i haven't had one in a long time so I hope they are behind me.

I wish him well, Karen

hope this helps re the coldsores:Cold sore are painful blisters around the lips and usually take about ten days to heal themselves. Once a crust has formed healing has begun.

Cold sores are due to an outbreak of herpes simplex virus that can lay dormant for a long period of time, and tend to mark a period when stress levels are high.

Use chamomile oil, calendula oil, geranium essential oil or tea tree oil neat to relieve the pain and swelling.

If the virus tends to be triggered by the sun, use a reputable sun block.

I type doctor's reports all the time, so checked my medical reference books, Dorlands and Tabers.

Usually cold sores are due to herpex simplex type 1 and localized to the facial area such as the mouth, nose, eyes.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection due to varicella-zoster virus (herpes zoster, not herpes simplex). They are different types of viruses. (I have never heard of anyone getting chickenpox from a common cold sore.)

Also, possible causes include fever, exposure to cold temperatures or ultraviolet rays, sunburn, cuts on the skin, emotional stress or nerve injury.

You can get a prescription for antibiotics from a doctor to treat the secondary symptoms of the virus or use over the counter medications. You didn't mention how old your son is but if he is biting the cold sore it will spread and stay longer.

My husband gets them a lot but I rarely do and usually rinsing with warm salt water for a day or so seems to help when I get them.

I used to get them a lot and got a prescription from the doctor called Valtrex. You take it for 5 days and the cold sore is gone!! Depending on how old your son is, it would definitely be worth it!! Also, check with your doctor to see if he thinks it would be ok for your son to take it. Since I have been taking the Valtrex (only when I get the cold sore), I don't get them as often either! A very nice side effect!!!

When I feel a cold sore coming on I use either Carmex or Blistex on it every hour. They usually end up not blistering on me if I get to it right away.

I haven't tried it yet. But, I was told to put pure vanilla flavoring on it for about a week and they will go away. Might be worth a try. The vanilla without the alcohol in it.
