Christmas Trees and Your Cats!

Do you have a cat that loves to climb into and onto your Christmas Tree? What do you do to try and stop that behavior? And what about the silver tinsel on trees? Do your cats like to try to eat it? Christmas time can be such a unsafe time for cats! What are your solutions other than just not having a cat? LOL

When we first got our oldest cat, he was just 6 wks old and it was Christmastime....fun for kitty! We didn't have any bulbs around the bottom of the tree that year because he liked to sit and bat at the bulbs like they were cat toys. ROFL!! We don't use tinsel, so we didn't have to worry about that. He did try climbing the tree when we first put it up. I'm so happy that he got over that!

Now that he is older (5), he just loves to sleep under the tree....literally....he balls the tree skirt up in a ball around the tree stand and then lays on it like a pillow. He sleeps like a person, liking a pillow wherever he is.

Our other cat is just too timid to do anything like that.

We had a cat like that who liked to sleep under the tree and bat at the tinsel but wouldn't try to eat it. The two cats we have now were climbers when they were younger, so we used table top trees until a couple of years ago. Now we use a larger artificial tree and they might try and stand up in the lower part when dh first puts it up but then lose interest after that. I have some ornaments that I made out of beads and pipe cleaners many years ago that are very durable so I put those around the bottom for them to bat around and if they knock them off I just put them back on the tree. I don't use tinsel anymore since it is too much of a hassle to remove. I've heard of some people putting a small fence around their trees but I don't know how well that would work since most cats can climb.

My cats would just take the fence as a challenge. lol!

My cats are like yours...they have to be involved in things in the beginning but then they lose interest. (THANKFULLY!)

Yes, I'm so glad they don't continue to try to climb it. I do find one of the beaded ornaments on the floor about every day throughout the season but they can't break those and I just let it be a part of their Christmas celebration, lol.
