"The Calico Buffalo" - A Tiny Champion for All People
-Acclaimed Children's Book Named Finalist for Nautilus Award

(Austin, Texas) In the tradition of Aesop's fables and stories like the The Jungle Book and The Lion King, the beautifully illustrated new children's book "The Calico Buffalo" aims to teach children the importance of diversity-and the tragedy of exclusion, of any kind. Written by EJ Stapleton, with full-color illustrations by India Baldwin, The Calico Buffalo brings this new tale to the American Southwest. And on May 5, the trade association NAPRA (Networking Alternatives for Publishers, Retailers, & Artists) recognized "The Calico Buffalo" by naming it a finalist for the Nautilus award which recognizes significant contributions to conscious living.

Liz Smith, nationally syndicated columnist, said, "We can always use a brand new legend in this old world and now we have one-The Calico Buffalo. This is a charmingly painted story punctuated with beautiful poetry. It is a life lesson calling us to decency and tolerance and the right to be or look or feel odd and strange. The Calico Buffalo will clutch your heart even as its villain, Thorn, catches your imagination. Bravo to EJ Stapleton and India
Baldwin." Georgia Family Magazine said, "The Calico Buffalo is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and intelligently written children's books I've read since the writings of Shel Silverstein."

The Calico Buffalo tells the fable of a baby buffalo, born to the leaders of the buffalo nation, who is colored like a calico kitten. The Calico Buffalo is the story of this buffalo nation's journey to find what should be done with so unusual a child, and a story of one nation's journey toward tolerance, acceptance and enlightenment. It is a call to celebrate the richness of diversity, in all of its forms.

They learn:
"Each buffalo child is quite perfect at birth
It needs no permission to live.
Some nod of approval or threat of removal
Is something that's not yours to give."

Note: At the request of EJ Stapleton, BOSC Publishing will donate the author's royalties in equal portions to The Home for Little Wanderers ( and The Jessie-Bullens Crewe Foundation (, both non-profit organizations that provide
much-needed services for children.
